The virtual world of Second Life consists only of the traditional mainland and maybe the northern moth continent. That seems to be the hinge for most of the contentious warmongering we politely call Mainland V Estate debate.

What qualifies such a notion? The mainland sims are attached to each other and host a plethora of diverse and interesting builds. This is true for resident managed continents as well. It's even arguable for singular public islands which share a map & search engine with the aforementioned continents. Where does the new southern continent, far removed from the traditional mainland, fit into this argument. Perhaps it's best ignored.

The mainland sims are managed directly by Linden Lab meaning that they can automatically bill credit cards and Paypal accounts whereas residential estates must rely solely on automated Paypal subscriptions. Is that a huge difference?

Linden Lab offers a 10% tier bonus so you can own 5068sm for as little as $31 a month with an annual premium account. That much land on private estates costs around $25 on resident-owned estates. Okay let's ignore that too.

Estates severely limit our movement and exploration by allowing unrestricted bans and bounce scripts. I'm just repeating this one as it's said to me over and over again. The implication seems to be that this isn't true on the mainland.

Mainlanders tell me that estate dwellers hate The World and are betraying The World, it's development, it's growth. I've not heard a counter argument from estate dwellers. If you have one, please reply, PM or IM it to me.

Anyway, I'm tired of being told that this little piece of the grid or that little piece of the grid is The World and everything else is not, not part of The World and, in fact, destroying The World. So I'm curious to know what you, the forum crowd, consider The World. Perhaps it'll help me understand why we square off and fight tooth and nail against each other based simply on which grid space we call home.

I think The World is the entire grid, as I voted above (maybe even add invisible sims, but meh). The problem I have is the definition of continents and I wish there was a better way to define these. We have the two mainland ones that are connected with an oil rig (damned oil companies always get involved) and then the far southern continent. So is that it? What about some of the bigger resident continents (eg: Azure Islands, Dreamland, the new SLDA [Oceana and Pi Islands] </end plug>;) - do they deserve an official "name"?

Perhaps if there was an efficient way to provide islands to be linked, we could form more coherent continents and not 5,674,203,203.1415926535 separate entities floating out there. I'm not trying to sway this convo to debate the merits and possibilities of doing so, I am just mentioning that it does make map finding/discussing/navigating/etc challenging.

To me, the world is everything on the main grid, public or private. To this definition, mainland or private estate is irrelevant.

The teen grid is another world and so are the preview grids.

Basically, grid = world.

The day when the islands and the mainland are different worlds is the day when you specificially join "Dreamland" or "Caledon" rather than SL, you can't move out of them, you can't IM anyone else, there's a different currency... and so on. They all affect each other.

Never heard that one. If anything the mainland is a lot worse for bans and bounces in my estimation. If it wasn't for the fact that a lot of people want to sell stuff, and you can't sell things to people if you ban everyone from your land, it would be worse.

I can't say I've heard that one personally, but I've heard vague variants of it in general. I think most estate dwellers would just say "no we're not". I can't speak for any other areas, but certainly in Caledon I think we add something to the grid overall, if I may be so bold as to say so.

Your world can be whatever you want it to be... There are no "private islands" in my world.

"The World" of SL, to me, is anything that I can access through the SL client.

I've seen posts from some alluding to how island owners have deserted/fled/abandoned the mainland grid to it's fate. But to me, SL is the whole world, mainland, southern continent, and all the islands too.

Those people who grumble about the folks fleeing the mainland should maybe think about an essay called "The Tragedy of the Commons".

And yes, Caledon adds a lot to SL. Desmond and the rest of you are to be applauded for your work and vision.

I live very happily in Spinach on the Northern Continent, and have no intention of moving any time soon. My Lady lives on an Estate Island, which is freely open to any who wish to visit, and contains some truly lovely examples of landscaping and home building.

While it is true that some people have chosen to create "private" island sims, I don't see those as being a significant fraction of the whole. I make a habit of zooming around the map, and clicking on a random Island, and tp'ing there just to see what is there. I have yet to be recieved anywhere with anything less than a pleasant welcome.
By doing this, BTW, I have discovered some lovely places to visit.

SL, to me, is the whole grid, and I have hardly as yet seen but a small fraction of it.

I'm confused... but basically this poll is:

what makes up the world

is it:
1) America
2) England & America
3) Antarctica
4) The World

.... and some of you actually voted for 1,2, or 3

Every other rectangle in the grid, checkerboard fashion, is the world. The other rectangles are the enemy, and must be sterilized.

SL is kinda... disjointed in a way. I would say *some* private estates are included in "The World" and others are not. The reason being, some are themed so differently from what you'd expect out of a cohesive world that they're hard to qualify in there with everything else.

But it really depends on how you're looking at it. If I were to say "The world of Second Life", it'd include everything you can see on the map. However if you say, "Walk around the world" or something similar, its more about the main continents.

The internet has destroyed much in terms of perspective termonology. We have this crazy thing that really has no place and very little in common with the real world sense of the word "world", and yet, there it is.

Then theres also the customized clients with their hidden estates that are of their own "world" all together. Eck, it's all such a psycological entomological mess. :p
