Ive been standing in the Welcome area now for about 2 hours flicking in and out.. so far Ive been personally attacked as has a lot of others by a KNOWN griefer.. and been griefed by a naked avatar.. whos an 04 by the way.. just LOOKS like a nooby.. seriosly.. there is an aweful vibe in the place right now.. the only friendly discussion is about how to deal with the retards that only seem to log into SL to grief and annoy.. seriosly.. we need someone in the WA that at least has some power to eject.. its ridiculas to even CALL it the Welcome area as it is right now.
extreemly annoyed Richie.

Waterhead is worse, since it's got a script zone. People get orbited every few mins.
I don't even go to the WA, cause it's been infected by griefers since way back, there is an individual with initials that maybe "JE" who feel it's their god given right to grief newbies etc. It's simply disgusting to stand there and have a normal conversation with that crowd around.

actually Waterhead is quite the opposite experience at most. People generally greet eachother without hostility or smarmy snarkish off the wall banter that is generally encountered at Ahern, Dore, Bonifico.. Waterhead does have the 'Streaker' pop in on occasion, but after closer review so does TS2-U

I know who you're referring to so all I can do is wink and acknowledge that something needs to be done about these individulas (which I shall not name here but if you PM me I can give you a long list of names and thier alts).

I thought I'd drop in and see how it's going there... It does seem to be a little un-welcoming right now. Everybody is sitting around ragging on someone. Not nice. Not nice at all.
Oh great, and now a sim's going down.

Hell, I don't even come INTO SL anymore because the loser population (aka greifers) has gone through the roof. Or else they try to orbit ME through the roof.

I'm not a huge fan of the WA, always seems to be a bad vibe there, like if you aren't part of the WA Elite, then you aren't welcome. You get jibed, people make snarky comments about you and it's generally not worth putting up with that kind of hassle from ppl that don't even know you on a personal level, and that isn't just my theory, i've heard that from quite a few people.
Saying that, n00bs always seem well received and helped, which is kinda the whole point of it.
But yeah, last time I was there the amount of griefers was kinda laughable, but that's what happens when you open your doors to all and sundry I'm afraid.

It's been a griefer's playground ever since they put that version there... There were griefers at the boardwalk/balloon dock version, but not so much, and there was usually a Linden nearby to keep control. These days it's insane.

welcome area

The welcome are can be wild, you never know what will happen anymore, There are however a lot of people that like getting people started there and made my life easier.
That being said it would be nice to have someone that can enforce the rules directly!
I strongly recommend building some changing rooms that allow new players to modify and change clothes without being exposed to everyone! after a short time you dont need these but it would save on embarrsment early on!

Heh, I was attacked my first day while in appearance mode in a WA. I got away from the WA as fast as possible, mainly because of the lag, though, and because I wanted to see the world.

Errrr no they don't. The orbits I mean. Speaking from the perspective of someone who probably spends two hours of his day in waterhead during primetime I can honestly say you don't know what your talking about.

I'll bite since I'm bored at work and no SL...
Being in Waterhead frequently for long periods, I can say that no, people don't get orbited every few minutes. When a griefer does show up, he doesn't last long usually due to people (Linden or otherwise) getting fed up, and that goes for griefers attacking anyone, not just their friends.
There are those in WH anyway who feel the welcome areas should be the safe havens they were intended to be for both newbies and regulars and are trying to return them to that state within the rules, if possible.
I agree the WA can be rather clique-ish and unwelcoming, but at least in Waterhead I can say there are those who do make a real effort to be friendly, and also those who try to help newcomers. Listening and observation usually clues me in on someone's intentions and reasons for being there, if I don't know them already, fairly quickly.

My vote is to rename the "Welcome Area" to the "Good Luck! You're gonna need it!" area.

I agree that the WA often has a bad 'vibe' about it. There are a regular few - albeit a disproportionately active few - who's only motivation is to be verbally anti-social or who broadly seem to feel the need to share their personal behavioural difficulties. Policing the WA would be a thankless task, but what I don't understand is why Linden don't use the WA as a convenient place where they can quickly filter out some of the scum. All they'd need to do is to stand there, as an incognito noob, for an hour or two and they'd have their quota of griefers filled for the month. The idiots there aren't exactly difficult to spot.

I am a new user and haven't posted before but this is somethign of particular concern to me. I almost quit SL the first week or so I was here, simply from being stuck in the Welcome Area and being assailed by bigots, violence junkies and little boys wanting attention.
Waterhead is much better and I switched to that area as soon as I found out about it. There is a little lump of land in the turnabout where all the griefer boys and show-offs go and if you stay away from that end, you are mostly okay.
I have also been building in sandboxes a lot since I haven't got any land yet and the problems there are much worse. I file about of five or six abuse reports each time I try to build in the sandboxes! I even build in a "no scripts, no vehicles, no weapons" sandbox and I still get run over, caged, and shot on an almost daily basis.
The solution seems pretty clear to me in that there are only a very small number of welcome areas and sandboxes. A Linden on hand in each area to eject people would completely solve the entire problem for good and would not take up much time or money. I don't know why they don't do it.
To me this is the main reason why the regular Welcome Area is so much worse than Waterhead. The regular Welcome Area is policed 24/7 by a group of people that support the griefers and their hijinks and shout down anyone who complains or files a report.
This is very effective!
Why not use this tactic the other way and have someone there all the time that supports the normal people? Sometimes I see those "Mentors" there, but they mostly just sit still and stare straight ahead. I have never seen one actually intervene or support someone being attacked. Maybe they aren't allowed to?
