i really hope it's not on the same level of the idiocies that that B-series newspaper wrote on italians when we were about to whoop their national team's rears in the world cup...

'Suzanne Vega is known as the "mother of the mp3", as her song "Tom's diner" was used as reference in the development of the mp3 format. Recently she performed a live concert in an online roleplaying game, the first artist of world renown to do so. And you can watch (and listen to) this concert here. As you can see, the room is rocking [ed: cut to silent, sitting people at the concert]. Well I guess you had to be there! [cuts to next scene] And now that you have probably fallen asleep ... um .. grooved I mean, let's continue with a music quiz!' (which bears no relevance to Suzanne Vega btw)
Background: Ehrensenf is a pretty tongue-in-cheek vblog; considering that I guess the review is not too bad ![]() Shiryu, while the Spiegel is often trying its best to become b-series, it's still one of the more reputable newspapers around these parts ![]() _____________________

Ehrensenf is just a comic short videoblog hosted on the Spiegel site, not really made by them. I have a hard time understanding her accent. (and yes, she has an accent) But this is what I get out of it. Drug boyfriend over to verify what was said, its his language after all.
There was a short blurb about Vega's previous work, calling her the "mother of MP3s" mentioned a song of hers (Tom's Diner), then said you could have attended a virtual concert of Suzanne Vega in Second Life, showed some blurbs of the venue and finished off with an ironical comment that's not very translatable into English, but amounts to "the place was empty - you should have been there". Empty shots of the venue, and "from what we see, the place was cooking" (literal translation) And the shots were of empty concert venue, only a few avies, so I guess you can get the irony. edit: Jackal got to it better than me, thanks Jackal! _____________________

I have a hard time understanding her accent. (and yes, she has an accent) What kind of accent? I just listened to it again and it seems to me that she's speaking a very "clean" german, maybe with a hint of northern dialects. Just curious to know what you hear in her voice ![]() _____________________

Just curious to know what you hear in her voice ![]() Maybe too many years in the south, but the way the words especially were said in the last bit gave me some trouble. Well even in the beginning too - Tom's Diner sounds like "Tom's Steiner" lol, and most of my friends don't say it that way. And "d" isn't really a difficult consonant for Germans, that award goes to "th" ![]() Was a bit fast and loud, hard to follow. So I went down to ask my bf to be sure, and that was the response. Maybe he's just trying to get rid of my incessant questioning though (he's from Frankfurt, so he's not from the south either - but also not from the north)_____________________

gah, I just looked at NWN, and seems like she just ripped off Hamlet's blog and made it satirical. I wonder if she actually even went there, or just pulled the stuff from his site.

She didn't rip off anything. She just quoted two or three sentences from Hamlet's blog in German. The only satirical remark was about the crowd going wild..and then with tongue in cheek..."oh I guess one had to be there..." Overall this is not a big whoop, just a blog from a wiseass chick. |

A woman who appears to be the Amanda Congdon of Germany features the Vega appearance on her Spiegel Online vlogcast: The description of her vlog: http://www.spiegel.de/netzwelt/ehrensenf/0,1518,,00.html Here is the translation: --- Daily Drivel as Video Blog Scurrilious findings on the net, whacko websites and bizzare news of the day: the Ehrensenf team finds them and turns them into a moody video cocktail. The most unconventionell news show on the net. Every day Ehrensenf. Every day on Spiegel Online. --- Other than that, a few sentences quoted from your blog and a wiseass remark about the "crowd going wild". |

Wow, is NWN a scurrilious finding, a whacko website, or just bizarre news of the day? WHY CAN'T IT BE ALL THREE?!
(Thanks for the translation assist, all!) _____________________

The only satirical remark was about the crowd going wild..and then with tongue in cheek..."oh I guess one had to be there..." Overall this is not a big whoop, just a blog from a wiseass chick. yeah I realise that, but she didn't say she was quoting from someone else's blog, merely a linkback to Hamlet's site on the page. I didn't realise she was quoting his site almost verbatim in the piece until I went to look at it. Actually, I dispute some of that information, because well, Suzanne Vega is about as much the "mother of MP3" as Al Gore is to the Internet. Yeah, they had some cursory involvement on the fringes, but it sure doesn't amount to very much and nothing they really did personally.and you missed the other satirical remark right after that, when introducing the music quiz. Eingesch... gegrooved sind. (what kind of German word is "eingegrooved" anyway?) She suggested the word, eingeschlafen. Which in that context, means boring (literally: fell asleep). Which I suppose it might be, to some. Given she hasn't got much more than a 10 second spot on it, I'd say it was mainly satire. _____________________
