This is to see if people are aware of the contest featuring a prize pot of $82,000L to come up with the Best Box Office (script will go open source). Do any of these poll choices apply to you? and if not, what would?

The Foundation for Rich Content is sponsoring a contest to come up with the best open source box office as a way to help experiential content makers support themselves in a post-DI economy. The prize is more than L$82,000. The contest will be held at the FFRC PG offices in Sami on March 26, 9am to Noon (exhibits and community feedback) then will be judged at 1pm-2:30. The winning script will have to be judged to be in keeping with the T.O.S. and be inoccuous. The winning entrant then gets a whole lot richer, and the SL community has a new, very useful, open-source script.

Let me know if you want more info or do a search on Box Office in the forums for all the details. OR just show up in Sami on March 26 to give feedback on the entries as a community member.

Yes, please send me more info. I've done a search on the forum but haven't found out any more details about this particular competition.

What would a week's extention do for participation?
03-21-2006 11:46
One scripter has asked for the deadline to be extended by a week. Do you folks think that might increase participation in the contest? or would it be unfair?

Perse - I think things should be extended out to offer more communication, and increase the quality of the entries.

(Not sure if you've done this yet, I haven't checked) - but making a seperate posting announcing the contest (again) in the scripting tips forum would probably be a good idea as well.

Many scripters just don't read the classified and/or general forums - you'll be reaching your target audience best by focusing your attention in that forum. :)

I hadn't been aware, but I've been swamped planning the RL concert thingy on the 25th. I doubt we'll make it with the guaranteed hangovers for those of us attending in Philly! Perse, contact me in the future; I'm sure we'd be happy to post news items on SLB for the FFRC. :-)

Regards,

I'm not a communications major, but if there's one thing I've learned from over fifteen years of online communication it's that you can *NEVER* assume the other person knows what you're talking about. This is especially true of made up abbreviations.

For what it's worth, I had heard of the contest from the SecondCast podcast but until I read this thread I had no idea what it was about.

Another idea...

I've seen several groups in SL such as "Scripters of Second Life", and others containing the title "Scripters".

Why not additionally contact the officers of these groups, personally tell them about the contest, and ask if they could make an announcement in their respective groups? :)

Great ideas folks. At the time, we announced the contest primarily in the forums and had posts in products wanted, events, and scripting tips. (This was going back to the tail-end of January to give people time to plan). Since then, I've held 3 fundraisers for the competition to promote awareness (those posted in the SLB as well as Events). Finally, I dropped info packets on the Scripters of Second Life members (a full afternoon's work. Wish I had thought of just talking to officers; that would have been easier!)

Additionally, we sent PSAs to Hamlet, the SL Herald, had coverage in the Metaverse Messenger, discussions with the Community Lindens, and posted a formal advertisement in MM. I'm pretty sure we sent info to BarounNet also since they made us our own channel. Glad to hear that folks heard about us on the pod-cast!

We're still (the Foundation for Rich Content) developing a publicity committee. We could sure use more volunteers on it. I'll send out a vote today among FFRC members to see if we want to extend the contest by 1 week (when I get out of work that is).

I really appreciate people's feedback, though. Any other ideas anyone might have about spreading awareness of the contest are super welcome.

Would a week delay do any good?
03-22-2006 01:41
One scripter suggested that not everyone has had his or her spring break yet, and that we might do better to put the contest off by a week. On the basis of that and what seems to be a lower awareness level than I had hoped, I've put a vote in to reschedule the competition for April 2. I'll report back when the vote has completed in 2 days if the date is changed.

Would anyone submit an entry on April 2 who wouldn't submit on this Sunday?

2nd try
03-24-2006 12:45
Hey there. I posted in here in general earlier but the thread got bumped to Events Discussion. SO I'm hoping that people see this 3rd attempt, 2nd try in General, to let people know that the vote yesterday for the FFRC Box Office contest deadline extention did not pass. It will go on as originally scheduled this Sunday. Cheers and good luck!
