When you push the 'leave group' button! :-P
But yeah, this does get annoying with big groups.

Annoying is not the word.

They say they want people to use groups. Not being able to turn off the chat just might be a reason they aren't used more. Jya think?

When the scripters of second life group gets enough jolt and alcohol in them they just won't shut up.

But if you click close, it'll not show up again until a new session starts, no?

I've dropped groups for this reason, even constructive ones. I just don't mesh well with people that insist on group chatting incessantly. More power to them. There are plenty of other projects out there to persue.

Don't you really hate it when IM to email fills your box with this stuff ha ha ha

yeah, a few seconds of peace.

There are 500 plus people in the mentors group. Sessions can start rather frequently.

I don't want to click close after I lose my place in the local chat, I want it to not be there to start with.

Why do people argue in favor of perpetuating dysfunctional and shoddy design?

I'm not, I'm all for more options. I'm just challenging your statement to get more insight on it.

I too have had this problem when I've been in the middle of working on a project. Worse is when I close the group window and not three seconds later someone screams at me for being rude because of the "Jora Welesa has left the session" message. I've been told "It's rude to just leave the chat without saying something."

Typical responses as of late have been "If any of you dips say something intelligent or worth listening to, I'll add to it."

I will usually want to read the group chats, but I don't want them interfering with the local chat down below.

Yes, I could open Chat History and disable IMs in there, but now the Chat History window is cluttering part of my screen and absorbing mouse clicks.

If we had a matching option to disable IMs in the chat overlay, just as we have with the chat history, that would be great.

I just hit the Leave Group button. A couple groups just turned sour as the founders and officers started bickering, coming out of a closet of one type or another, or showing extremely lopsided favoritism in moderating the group.

I just left. I also dropped a few 'vip' groups, etc. Because it was all event spam. I get busy lately and sometimes I'll accidentally type a filepath like //calico/savant/rem3423/.... and enter because I'm too stupid to see what I'm typing into.

A system that displays all the local chat (perhaps 20 people) plus the output of 15 group chats in one display in a uniform font and color is distinctly sub-optimal.

I am only in the dry question and answer groups so I can try to answer people's questions.
Joining a big fun friendly group where people chatted for pleasure would, because of the horrendous design of the chat display, be completely intolerable.

Maybe I should try to incorporate a request for garish pulsating colors and rounded corners and making the group chat dance around on the screen and get bright and washed out when you use it into my request, then it would be seen as wonderful and groovy.

The fact that the best non-solution people offer is to quit the groups demonstrates what a failure the current group chat system is.

While this is a valid method of gathering insite, it also has the disadvantage of leading those who could/would implement a change/fix to believe that there might be a voice against doing so.

stone age chat system
01-13-2006 11:46
so far while everything else in SL seems bleeding edge, the chat system IS stone age
I can go to any other MMO on the market and there is always a very sophisticated chat system with a good filtering system
if you belong to a guild, which is the equivelent to a group, you can turn on, and off, your guild channel
IMs can be filtered into their own chat box or you can have them go directly to the main chat and be a different color text, and you dont have to open a bloody box window to reply to them, you just use shift+R to reply to the last person who IM'd you, also being able to scroll thru the names of your last private messages received
you can also just TURN off private messages altogether if you need to.

now why dont we have this functionality in SL?
IM is annoying for conversations, its great for a once in a while question or something but some folks think you got nothing better to do then sit and IM all day. LOL if this was the case I would just stick to yahoo ;)
it costs less

any propositions out there yet for a less clunky chat system? we need to know so we can go vote!

I find this to be a big problem too. Being in the mentors group as well as the Elven group, can be very .... challenging. :)

I dont want to leave either group and I actually read all the chat but on a 12" screen, having the entire thing fill up with text when you are trying to build and move five dialogue boxes around is crazy! I think the Lindens must all have 30" cinema displays.

I also hear what the other poster said about being polite. I have never been told off about it, but I always wait for a long time before closeing off the chat as not to appear rude (even when I am *really* busy or otherwise privately occupied), but you shouldn't have to do that.

If it was seperate and not blinking at you, annoying you, and scrolling all over your screen, you could just go about your business and go look at it later.

People who get bombarded by too many messages from friends do of course have the option of publicly announcing that they are a libertarian, this will pretty much solve the problem in many cases.

Alot of the groups, you'd have to explain what a Libertarian is.
Or... a Librarian, for that matter.

why can't we imbed windows into the ui like other modeler and cad software? then the chat windows and build windows and script windows would be seperate windows in the ui and the world window would just get smalle but be unobstructed.

or why can the non graphic windows just be able to leav the world window. why waste so much on rendering it in that way?

do you want sketches?

Let me add my vote I would LOVE to be able to turn group chat off when I'm building or teaching, but i don't want to have to leave these groups....some of which I MUST stay in for varoius reasons.

There are some groups that are open join, and for those groups, leaving and joining the group actually will serve the purpose of keeping the chat from bugging you, If you have a leaky memory like mine, you might want to put a line in your profile notes and make a notecard with the names of the groups you like to leave and rejoin at will.

Invitation only groups you don't necessariy want to leave, you never know when the officers might go out of town or get too busy to answer IMs, and you sure don't want to leave the Linden made groups expecting to get back in promptly.

The way the group list shows how to join is kind of defective, unless I am just failing to see something. When you do Find Groups, there may a Join Now button, lit up, if it is open join, and you aren't in the group. There may be a greyed out inactive Join Now button, that means it is open join and you are in the group. For invitation only groups, there is nothing saying Invitation Only or IM an Officer to Join, the area where this could be displayed clearly is just blank.

I guess the problem with leaving and joining open join groups is simply that so many of the groups are not open join. I am fairly sure that in some cases the officers would have the group be open join, and may have had it open join, but then they find that some jerk joins, and misbehaves, and they kick them out only to find that the jerk can't take a hint and find somewhere else to go and keeps rejoining the group, so the officers reluctantly switch the group from open join to invitation only, despite the fact that this might keep a lot of people who could benefit from joining the group because people are silly about sending an IM when it's needed plus people want things to happen instantly.

The chat history window has some problems that bug me, the first is that it should have a control right on it, not hidden in the preferences but right there visible on the chat history box itself to set the background color and the text color. --edit-- AND TRANSPARENCY!

The other problem is that if you scroll back to look at some chat from earlier and forget to scroll back to the end you no longer see new chat. If you scroll all the way to the next to the last line but miss reaching the end line it looks much the same as being at the end but you don't see the incoming chat.

This couild be solved by having one line at the bottom of the chat history be non-scrolling and just show the latest incoming line of chat. The rest of the area above would hold the scrollable chat as is done at present. You could scroll back and let it set there showing stuff from an hour ago if you wanted but the latest incoming chat line would always be displayed.
