If I understand correctly, the in-world chat system is going to be opened up so as to be accesible by a chat system like Jabber.
Is that going to include the public channel 0 chat, or just IMs?
Might this mean it would be possible to get at least some of the chat read by a text to speech system?
I just got a text to speech program using NeoSpeech voices, it's reads better and sounds better than a lot of real humans can do. It would be real nice to be able to have some of the SL chat read out loud. That would be real useful when I'm inworld in one window and reading the forums or such in another.

I find it amazing how much text-to-speech has advanced. I've seen some Japanese synthete experiments that fooled conversants over a cellphone, partially because the limited bandwidth "masked" some of the actual artifacts, but impressive all the same.

I wonder if the inworld chat could get sent to the forums, or to something like the forums. The Electric Sheep Company is working on a tool for in-world meetings that sends all the meeting chat (for everyone who decided to opt-in) to a searchable database on the web. Try out a demo here. Seach for "Rosencrantz" to get an idea on how it works. It's still a work in progress. _____________________
