I noticed in this last update, hover tips, even while being enabled, only show up for certain objects. Is there a way to make them show up for all objects like they used to pre-last update? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

New Features:
* New Hover Tip default behavior:
- View menu > select "Show Hover Tips" option (the default setting) now shows Hover Tips only for objects with which one can interact.
- View menu > deselect "Show Hover Tips" option works as before; no Hover Tips will be shown
- To view Hover Tips for all objects (the old default behavior), add the line "ShowAllObjectHoverTip TRUE" to the settings.ini file, found in the following locations:
- Windows: Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\SecondLife\user_settings
- Mac OS X: Users/USERNAME/Library/Application Support/SecondLife/user_settings
- To view Hover Tips only for Land, add the line "ShowLandHoverTip TRUE" to the settings.ini file instead.
***IMPORTANT NOTE: Be sure to use a TAB character between the option name and the "TRUE" setting. Then, after editing the file, restart SecondLife to see the Hover Tips as desired.***

Taken from the release notes :D

This doesn't work for me :(

Any ideas? :(

I think when SL starts, it overwrites my settings! My appended line to settings.ini vanishes... What to do? Make it read only?

Is there anyone who has got the old hover tips thing to work and do you have tips for making it work? I tried the settings.ini file thingie, saved, and restarted, but it's still not working. It just erases the line I added to the settings file...help? :(

Ah, I don't like the new hovertip system... Lindens, could you make this feature toggle-able so users accustomed to the old style will be comfortable in SL? :D

Thanks :)

Why you need hover tips if you are a creator
11-23-2005 01:20
I didn't see the discussion which Philip started about making hover tips appear only for objects with which you can interact, and maybe I wouldn't have realised what a pain this would be if you are filling boxes or dealing with a lot of similar items for packing.

This change makes life very difficult if you are stuffing boxes in SL, as it is no longer possible to simply mouse over the boxes to work out which one has what in it, you have to right click and read the general page. This is very longwinded.

If they were going to change it, I think it would have made sense to keep hover tips for all items owned by an avatar, and keep other people's objects to hover tips only show if you can interact with the object. I assumed this WAS what it was going to be, as I can interact with all my owned objects.

I have followed the instructions and changed the settings.ini file. I am not sure I would have realised that I also needed to save the change without a scripter on my shoulder :-). Maybe people who have found that things reverted, railed to save the settings file before they left? Of course I may be back to change this post if I log out next time and find it has reverted :-).

I got it to work--after several minutes spent unable to find the file before being reminded I wasn't showing Hidden files--and sL didn't erase it. I capitalized it just as the notes said, and put a Tab space between the command and TRUE.

OK I said I would never post in General again.

but. Just this once I'll do it.

Sean Gorham helped me get my hovers back in a very simple way that explained the gibberish that LL posted, so I will post it here to help yall out:

Log out of SL.

Go to C:\Documents and Settings\<your windows login name here>\Application Data\SecondLife\user_settings\settings.ini

and edit it in Notepad.

Add the following to the end of the file:

ShowAllObjectHoverTip TRUE
ShowLandHoverTip TRUE

Save and exit.

Start up SL. You're done.

I tried to do all of that, but I can't find that file even after having it show Hidden Files. I uninstalled SL then re-installed it and still can't find it.

I'm using a PC with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, but I think it would be in the same place.

It worked fine for me and I didn't do anything special... make sure you save, as in anything you change, and remember the file is in the Documents and Settings area not in the program area. Yeah, I know you know all that already...

Mine does "detecting hardware" everytime at boot, which I thought was normal, but I've been told that that may be what is reverting my settings.ini

[sarcasm]

apparently this is something that only advanced users of SL should be taking advantage of, and so moved the ability to turn it on into an obscure flag you need to manually type in to turn on. something that only an advanced user of SL would know how to do  [/sarcasm]

they should have left it as a third option to toggle with under the configuration menu.

Excellent, but I would still like to know why I can't find the settings.ini file.

Oh, I see the problem that you folks are having.

The solution is simple --- just upgrade to the Linux client, and you'll have no trouble finding the settings.ini file. ;)
