I admit I don't read the forums much and I pay no attention to anything that might possibly be important. So I probably missed the news about this. Sorry, but I'll ask anyways.

Tonight I was exploring some new islands. I saw the new Otherland club and some beautiful sandy beaches. I stayed clear of the few people I saw and had some fun flying around. Then I hit an invisible wall and got a message that I'm not allowed here. That's fine. I flew up to 1000 meters, leveled off and hit the wall agian. OK, 2000 meters (drifting thoughts flight boost) and wham. 4000 meters - wham. 5000 meters - wham. I'm not allowed to fly 5000 meters above someone's head.

There was no way around the sim - void on both sides. I dropped to sea level and checked the property. I thought it must be owned by the US government or God. No, just some group I never heard of (that doesn't mean anything cause groups are something else I don't pay any attention to).

So what's the new rule? How high do you have to get? I mean in meters, not kilos.

I'm not pissed or anything. If this sounds like a rant it's cause it's 2AM here and I've been banging my head against a wall. so to speak. Thanks, Jix

If there's a void on both sides, and the sim is obviously PRIVATE, why are you even TRYING?

I apologize for the flippant tone in my first two posts. I would still like to know what he general ban rules are. Are there different rules for private islands than for regular property? If someone could point me to a Linden page that would be great.

I'm going to get some sleep now.

You don't own the land or the sim, PLUS wrong thread.

AFAIK, there are 3 types of built-in access restriction you can bump up against as a flier (not counting security scripts). There is also one 'end-of-world' limit built into SL. I'll explain them.

Level 1 (easy to avoid): "access" lines: created when a parcel is set to only allow avatars in a certain group or 'allowed' list to enter it. These lines are green, and they extend (IIRC!) about 60m high above the land parcel they are based on. They are *very* easy to avoid... just fly up a few dozen meters, then fly over them. You can identify these because you get the message "you are not a member of group" or similar when you bump into them, and they're green.

Level 2 (medium/hard to avoid): "banned" lines: bright red, and when you bump into them you get "you are banned". These lines go up 768m from the land's surface. This means that you will really need to use some form of fly assistance to get over them, or teleport around them to land you are not banned on. Yes this is annoying, but that's why you should be nice to other residents and avoid being banned.

Level 3 (impossible to avoid): "private sim" lines. Bright red, and THICK. These occur when you're trying to cross a sim boundary to enter a sim which is set so that only members of certain groups can access it. You can identify these because they NEVER fade away, no matter how high you fly! Another way to notice them is when you call up the world map to try to see where you are, the space where you're trying to go *appears* like there is nothing there. You can also look out over where you are trying to go - if you see endless water.... then it is either a private sim or the void.
You cannot get past these lines. There is nothing you can do. Choose somewhere else to fly. Unlike 'group only' parcel access, there is NOTHING you can do to get into a private sim - private sims, unlike private parcels, are secure.

Level 4 (impossible to avoid): "void" : this means you are bumping up against the edge of existing space. There is quite literally no sim beyond the point you are flying. Nothing exists there. It is *impossible* for you to keep flying in that direction. You have to turn around.

Hope this helps fliers know what they're dealing with :)

Tip: Bring up the map and 'jump' behind it to the place you are looking for. Needs a bit of help if the map has not updated in some time, but works most of the time.
