I have been in the 1.11 preview grid for about an hour.

THE LAG IS ABSOLUTELY HORRENDOUS!!

When are the Devs gonna stop playing with themselves coming up with all this fancy technical fluff and concenterate on improving the basic playabiity of the game?? What good are all these new features if yur gonna get a headache from frustation in trying to move from place to place??

There is no other online game that comes anywhere close to the lag almost always present in this game recently! No other gaming community would tolerate the poor quality of game play nearly almost always present in SL recently.

Well Clarie:

I'm playing on an Uber top-of-the-line high-speed-cable connection/direct connection no wireless.

I am playing on a custom gaming rig that cuts through all other online games at the highest quality settings like butter.

the preview grid is on old, tired servers. Don't know if that helps any. But the preview grid, client side, was the same as 1.11.0 to me last night.

I have an Athlon 64 X2 4800+, 2GB, and two 7900GTX 512's. and I usually get around 8-9 FPS in average areas. That's just how SL is. It's not pre-manicured like other games.

"All the other online games" use B-tree methodology to decide what you (the client software) see and don't see next. What the 'other' online games do is pre-render animations and store them client-side and then transmit a token saying "play animation # 153 in location X,Y,Z for character #45". Second Life says "Character #45, which is made up of the following 3,400 polygons, in which the arm is currently describing arc {equation} and the face is deformed with the followign huge set of dislocations {...} ... as the following sound (being transmitted from the server) is played ..." You have a seriously smaller set (think exponential) of features/polygons/data being transmitted for "All the other online games". Second Life demands nearly a 10Mb sustained throughput for the "like butter" experience, as well as a /very good/ processor/motherboard/swap space/memory/graphic card.

The answer is: You're not playing "all the other (linear, prescribed) MMOGs". You're virtual-3D-desktopping into another machine.

Oh please. Don't even try to act like the lag in this game isn't bad. Either this would be the first mmorph game you ever played or you're a linden in a sheep outfit.

I am aware of all of that. Butthere must be something the Devs can do to improve playability. What I am asking is that the devs concentrate on playability for a while before giving us more features. It's commonly referred to as learning to walk before you run.

well, they're working on that. Occlusion culling was part of that. New changes in the LOD system are another part. I doubt it's the last we've seen of such things.

Umm...I use a 2 and a 3 year old Dell Laptops (definately not the fastest machines - but with 1 to 1.5 Gig RAM), a 1.5mb DSL and 54Mb Wireless connect the the home network...and my system flies. No noticeable Lag....except after about 3 - 5 hours continuous play it suddenly slows down (my guess is memory leaks). So I simply relog and off it goes back up to full speed. There are often 2 of us only simultaneously from here and it still seems lagless.

One thing though...I spent a lot of time tuning the Win XP environment, and also, at least in the case of the Dells the NVIDIA graphics drivers the second to last release is much faster and more reliable than the last release - and i still seeam to have all the swanky new graphics features. My only problem is that SL kills my mike so Voice comms don;t work after I log out.

A couple of releases ago I had a lot of trouble on the later of the 2 Dells - which triggered my bout of machine tuning.

Don't forget to update your BIOS ROM software when you do driver updates...

Also the if you are using DSL/ADSL and even cable in lots of areas, you in fact share the line with other users in your area, so your real speed may be way below the rated speed.

you may want to change your bandwith setting in your prefences.. i think the default is 300, try setting the slider to the maximum

From what I hear, even middling hardware runs Second Life very well when connected to the LL local network (which probably has a sustained 100 MBPS throughput).

I don't know anything about your particular ISP. I would venture to guess, however - if you're in North America - that you have "American Consumer Broadband", which at 5-8 MBPS /pulsed/ along with various "QoS initiatives" being pulled by various ISP's, makes me suspect of your network's capabilities. In the rest of the world, calling 5-8 MBPS pulsed :"Broadband", is considered a joke. If you're on a DSL connection, you're getting pulsed/managed throughput more than likely. If you're on a cable connection, you're getting shared bandwidth depending on traffic from other leafs on your node. Plus however the various first-tier ISP's in between you and LL handle your traffic has some bearing on what you experience. TCP/IP is a connectionless protocol - whatever lag there is on the network, you get to experience.

I've seen really nice sustained throughput speeds from most commercial ISP installations and some of the "nextgen" Fiber consumer installs, but unless you're in one of their pilot areas, you don't have that - and the throughput was to the carrier's own content servers, and nothing else was allowed to be tested. so.

<snip> so.

There's also the possibility that your "top of the line system" is being port-scanned by script kiddies several times a second since you're "directly connected" to your modem, eh? Handling incoming requests uses network processing time and resources. Make sure you're behind a NAT'd firewall/router so that every automated bug and scriptgoober on the Internet isn't talking directly to your TCP/IP stack.

I'm not advocating anything but - I first read about Second Life from a Blog post someone had made describing a homeless woman who built herself a system via dumpster-diving just so she could connect to SL.

My connection consistently tests at `18.5 Mbps.

I was not aware of the issue you raised bout script kiddies stealing bandwidth. I am currently using only a software firewall. I'll look into a router asap . Ty for the info.

Michi, you probably have a serious misconfiguration or other problem with your machine.
Check all drivers e.t.c.

I have 30-45 fps in most areas of SL on a moderate 2GHz machine with a 6800 card.
