I'm fairly new to SL but I have to say I love it! I have a vision for creating a community of Esperanto speakers in SL. This involves two things: 1) getting current esperantists to join SL and 2) helping current and new residents to learn and use esperanto. I don't know of any other efforts of this kind currently, but here's what I'm looking at, in a step by step presentation: 1. Make a simple headquarters (or home) both for current esperantists and to teach the language. I've already done this. Visit La Movado de la Verda Stelo (Samoa 181, 237, 63) where you can find a tiny Esperanto museum, words of the week, simple lessons for beginners, and I hope other esperantists! 2. Create a new group "Movado de la Verda Stelo" to collect money, land, and of course active esperantists. 3. Make a large Esperanto center with a large Esperanto museum, courses, a coffeehouse, and meetings. 4. Gather a group of esperantists to create a community in one sim. There will will be able to make new buildings and live primarily in the international language. We will be able to spread the word of our community both to the residents of Second Life and to the esperanto community in the whole world. Maybe we'll be able to convince some of the large Esperanto efforts like Esperanto magazines, Internacia Televido, the UEA, and artists to create a virtual presence in our community. 5. Buy an island for a larger community. Can you imagine a virtual Universal Congress not only yearly but weekly? What do you think? Write to me. And if you know nothing about Esperanto, check out http://esperanto.net Gxeremio Dimsum

Is it a useful language? As in, will I be able to order something at McDonald's in Spain with it?

From: Selador Cellardoor Did anything come of this? Yes. We have a Lingva Universitato set up at Esperantujo [Shelter 105, 82]. We offer basic classes in Esperanto so far, plus we offer a correspondence course via notecards. We also have an Esperanto museum and a cafe to practice your language skills on the same campus, as well as a tower for the start of an Esperanto-language community. We'd like to expand the Universitato and cafe to include many languages.

Esperanto is just another white man's language.
We have enough of those.

Another white man's language? I hope this was intended as a weird comment, and not meant seriously, because Esperanto is most popular in countries like Iran, Vietnam, Korea, and Brazil - where their languages are in marginalized positions in the world.

Oh, I see what you mean

Well I didn't realize you were only talking about black people. Cuz, see, most of the world isn't white. Including many places where Esperanto is popular. And there are some Esperanto groups in Africa, but they're not as well-established as many other groups in the world. If you're curious, you can find some good links at http://dmoz.org/World/Esperanto/Regiona/Afriko/Though I warn you in advance that some of the links are dead or old, quite a few show that Esperantists have a growing community of Africans among us. Out of curiosity - what do you think about the language problem as it relates to Africa especially? Do you think the African Union should have a common language?
