Does anyone know if using the gray loading texture on hidden faces might have any benefit?

The gray loading texture appears on objects which have a script withllSetPrimitiveParams([PRIM_TEXTURE, ALL_SIDES, NULL_KEY, <1,1,1>, <0,0,0>, 0.0]); .

I don't think it really matters.

You just need to pick a texture that has a high chance of being in people's cache already (such as the wooden one, or that loading texture). Or just set the polygon to blank with no texture.

Basically, you want something that doesn't cause a asset server hit when the geometry rezzes.

Normally, you could gain other benefits by making all of these hidden sides of the same texture type (so they could batch themselves and be rendered at once). But... I am not at all familiar with how SL works anyway when it concerns batching polygons with the same textures.

They probably don't even bother. These days, state changes for textures probably cost little or nothing, and since SL is so texture-heavy, sorting the render list might cost more than just letting the card bounce around between a lot of textures per polygon.

No one has any numbers based on actual tests on this matter, huh?

Are you not better off simply setting any hidden surfaces as blank instead of having a texture?

That's generally what I do... but I haven't tested the results... I just simply assumed... lol

It appears that when I select blank it applies a texture , a plain white texture, which is my inventory, not something built in the SL.

I renamed this texture to "was Blank" and that is still what is applied when I click the Blank button in the Pick Texture dialog. That seems odd.

It believe that the "Blank" button in the texture window is coded with the UUID of the blank texture, rather than looking for it in your inventory.

What I'm more interested is, why is there a 'none' button, but its not clickable?

I'd recommend using the 'no texture' option.
