I found amazing how sometimes you meet someone while shopping or exploring and you start talking to the person and discover you hit along well and talk for hours and hours of past experiences and adventures... all what each other have gone thru SL, what each create... ect...

You invite that person to explore and visit your place or viseversa that same moment. Still spend 4-5 hours maybe talking about building, friends, ect... You go back and forth to afk and come back quick because the conversation is too darn good and you want to continue sharing. And you say to yourself... "wow this person is so cool, a new friend on my list"

After 4-5 hours the new friend or you have to go, or log off or whatever. You say bye to each other... and say.. "ok, hey keep in touch, lets hang more around, this was fun!!! Yeah... cool of course!! lets keep in touch"!! "Sure, lets keep in touch!!"......

But then days start passing by and passing by and passing by.... you never talk to the person again... after months 5-6-7 months of no communication, you say...

"who is this person's name on my list? Where did I meet this person from?

Isn't that funny? oh well!

I've been meaning to prune my friends list for some time, but I'm too much of a chicken and I'd probably mistake someone I talk to for a 'silent one' and delete them :/

I often make the effort to talk to people if I see their name pop up online, but then sometimes I wonder why I'm bothering. It takes two people to maintain a friendship and however bad I may feel about not staying in touch, they didn't contact me either...

I would term this the Seinfeld friend rule, after a bit from one of his routines. To wit, that when you are a kid, any kid walking by outside your house RIGHT NOW is automatically your friend. If you have a single characteristic or interest of any kind in common, they're now your best friend.

I only keep people on my list that I talk to or talk to me on a regular basis. I keep my list for true friends and just have a few on it that are business contacts. If someone doesn't show an interest in being an actual friend or seem to be busy all the time then they are off it.

What's funny is when people get mad and then you readd them thinking they will actually make some sort of attempt to contact you and never do, so off they go again. I'm not the kind of person that has a list of people they never talk to, I don't collect names. It's quality over quantity for me.

Make a note of where you met them and how and the date. It also helps to jot down their interests or what they do in SL. Record this info in the Profile page under My info or whatever that last tab is called now. It saved my rear several times.

And yes this has happened to me quite often.

Think of it as the SL equivalent of "having a friendly conversation with a stranger when you get stuck at some gate at the airport waiting for a plane". You might never see them again but it never hurts to reach out and connect.

Also another reason this is happening is in SL people feel a lot more secure about reaching out to people due to various reasons I will not go into here.

Good observation tho. Thanks for posting it and making me feel better about my long friends list. :-)

Troy
