I found it mentioned in the BLOG of Linden Lab Employee Mark Ferlatte.
http://cryptio.net/~ferlatte/blog/ His post of Sun, 09 Oct 2005 mentions that he works for Linden Lab. His post of Sat, 25 Feb 2006 mentions having to make an emergency trip to the colo for some reason. I assume he still worked for LL at the time and that the colo he is referring to is the LL colo. _____________________

That is the building where the whole grid is hosted. Its quite an amazing facility; we were lucky enough to be given a tour during our visit to San Francisco. It was fairly amusing, as it was also the first time Philip had been there!
I can personally attest that the asset server is NOT a TRS-80. Regards, -Flip _____________________

Did they open it up for you to prove it? Did you know the TRS-80 Model 16 was the biggest selling UNIX workstation for most of the '80s? They could still have a few online... A house we had in college had a "Reagan Room" of all Reagan-era computers; its morphed into this: http://reagan-era.martnet.com/ And no, it wasn't opened up for us. Very impressive data center, however. ![]() Regards, -Flip _____________________

Eep Quirk: Interesting. You must have a LOT of time on your hands. ![]() I ate a handful of choco espresso beans and drank a 24 oz Pepsi before bedtime. When I tried to lie down, the bed threw me out. So, I was at the keys for a few hours in the night. ![]() _____________________

*blinks* ?? So the grid is housed in a place separate from the business? Under contact us, they list 1100 Sansome Street for their addy.
*looks confused and then just walks away shaking her head* Not that it would't be the first time...... _____________________

The grid is housed in a "colo" (colocation facility.) It's just racks of computers that Linden Lab rents. That way, LL doesn't have to build and maintain the entire physical infrastructure of the grid. It's the way things are done when a company needs massive server power.

For some reason I thought they bought the computers, and paid the colo folks to house them and run them.

It amounts (mostly) to the same thing. Leasing has certain tax and cost advantages, but I'd be surprised to find out that it makes or breaks the business model.

Just think how much money LL could save if it allowed simulators to be run by anyone... They're saving us all money with their bulk buying power, and keeping inter-sim communication smooth but having it all on the same sub-net. Imagine sim border crossing with one sim in Japan and the other in Florida! What they're doing makes perfect sense (for now) until there's some killing predicting code in the client to handle sim hand-offs, or sims organized by physical location region. What they're doing makes perfect sense (for now) until there's some killing predicting code in the client to handle sim hand-offs, or sims organized by physical location region. client-side vs. server-side: SL needs more client-side functions for most, if not all, functions. Not everything needs to be server-side. Everyone doesn't need to have everything in-sync with everyone else. Movement, rotation, scaling, prim parameters, sun/moon movement, lights, etc, could all be animated much smoother if client-side (and no stupid delays!). Active Worlds does this and it works well--and AW4 even has a new "global" command where everyone (in visible range, of course) sees/hears the same smooth effect. Interpolate server-side values so the client always sees things smoothly. |

Obviously, sim size should be expanded (greatly) so "hand-offs" don't HAVE to occur NEARLY as often. Active Worlds can have worlds HUNDREDS and THOUSANDS of times larger than a sim. Yes, sims have to handle more things, but that's an inherent design flaw that needs to be addressed: More and more features are being made client-side. Flexible attachments, etc. However, they're all phantom. If you're going to try to have physics, you need a central clearing house for calculations for collissions: IE, not client side. While I liked Active Worlds ability to have basically "any size", I hated the "detached" feeling each region had from one another. I wouldn't cite that as "the way to go" - we've seen how great Active Worlds is at maintaining a community. Its dead. Regards, -Flip _____________________

Physics doesn't have to be server-side; the client can interpolate most of it with even the slightest bit of intelligence (basic Newtonian physics). I never said sims could not still be attached while remaining much larger than they are. They don't HAVE to be attached by sims butting right up next to each other but can be more like villages/towns/cities connected by roads or something. Just because AW's management is crap doesn't mean a cross between AW and SL can't be achieved. |

By openly publicizing the physical location of our grid, you're opening SL up to Al Queda terrorist attacks.
I need to log into SL and move my assets and children to an undisclosed location in case someone flies a plane into this facility now. I am changing the SL threat level to "Elevated" right now. thanks a lot.... Troy PS. I was kidding. For those who go as far as thinking there's a function called llGetFurry(Key id) ![]() PPS. No, no disrespect was intended for the memories of the WTC victims and survivors being that I am a survivor of the event. So don't go crucifying me just yet. ![]() _____________________
