Linden Labs decided to pull the plug? I would be interested in reading different scenerios about what would take place if that did happen.

How would our money and land be handled...etc.

That's actually covered by the terms of service. Any "real" money we've sitting inLindeX we'd have the chance to get back via several methods - but i think that's all LL has to be responsible about. The L$, our creations, land we own and whatnot... poof into the void.

I used to use "MrSwap.com". Don't look for it, it's not there any more. It was an alternative to eBay, and a rather dull one.

People who signed up for MrSwap.com got 20 swap points for free, and items (video games and music CDs for the most part, maybe DVDs?) would be listed as x swap points.

Later on MrSwap.com allowed people to take payment in US$ by credit card because nobody wanted to list anything to get the extra swap points to get anything. This was a warning sign that something was wrong.

Finally, they pulled the plug on the site. Basically management said, "Since we gave you free swap points for joining, and free swap points for the first 20 things you listed with us, the swap points are worthless, so you're getting nothing. Have a nice day."

This despite the fact that there was a loose exchange rate between swap points and US$, which should have been honored. But, in a collapsing company, they will make an excuse so as to give out more severance pay than otherwise. (Not that I believe they could have paid all their employees!)

••••

So, if LL collapses, what next? A few possibilities:

•"All charges are for entertainment value only and are final."
•"L$ is now worthless as SL no longer exists. We hope you got out before it was too late."
•"You'll have to speak with our lawyers, who have already eaten up some of the dough."
•"We will refund money to the best extent possible, but your chance of seeing your L$1000 refunded in US$ is practically nil.
•"You get no money. We're not collapsing, we're just waiting for outside funding to arrive someday. We'll keep your money safe in our database until then."
•"Here, have a broken server. Sorry we lost the instruction manual."

My guess is that if LL were to pull the plug, this would occur after they stopped making money. In order to bring residents back to SL, they would offer some sort of incentive, probably in terms of Linden Dollars. The Lindex would reflect this change, and the value of the Linden would plummet. So, by the time LL would pull the plug, the value of the linden would be effectively worthless.

Rich peeps by today's terms, would be able to buy themselves a cheeseburger, but would have to pay for the fries.

Following all the rules of nature that I have encountered throughout my life, I must say that this will happen eventually. I hope it is not for a very, very long time, but eventually it will happen. Nothing is infinite.

Personally, the economy seems stable enough right now, and it looks to me that LL is trying to further balance that economy, which must mean - LL is making enough money to keep SL going.

How to know when

1. Unexpectedly long gaps in releasing an updated viewer.
2. No new mainland sims added for a long time.
3. When a real competitor actually shows up, like Google.
4. Look at the 'wildlife'. Old vendors start to pack up and selling off everything. You know, like those bears that can tell that a storm is coming.
5. When Philip actually has time to talk to you at length.

I suspect that if LL simply 'pulled the plug' certain LL customers with the financial clout to do so would demonstrate exactly how binding the TOS is.

The TOS covers the rules of how subscribers behave, but does not guarantee that LL will not "pull the plug" on SL.

People in here keep talking about how they demand rights, they demand laws -- well, I keep saying it -- SL IS NOT THE 51st STATE IN THE US -- and the day that LL thinks they're losing control to the morons who think they're little inworld Trumps is the day they'll dump the entire thing in the nearest sh*tcan.

What if..

The world rolled onto it's side?

An orange was called a purple?

Ducks barked?

Some of you fatalists must have listened to too much Fiona Apple in her early days or something...
