Not sure where to post it but here goes...

I sometimes hear about folks who can back up their items (in particular prim objects) in SL. Is this really possible?

I suspect they just mean 'pick up a copy of it and put it in their inventory' as a means of saving their progress in case everything vanishes or the sim catches fire or something. I don't know of any other method, or a means to save items externally.

It's actually do-able, but it requires a lot of work and some fancy scripting.

Re-importing the object is even harder, but again, do-able.

In addition to just making a copy of an object to hold in your inventory, you can also put a copy in a box inworld, that way if your inventory vanishes there is a still a copy in the box inworld.

Also get an alternate account and give copies to the alternate.

These approaches don't work with no copy no mod items.

I suspect the suggested idea of backing up objects throught scripted means also doesn't work for restricted permissions items.
