I checked a few various forums to find where this would go, and it seems this is the best. If it's not, please forgive me and let me know where to put it.
Anyway, a user I met has some land that she wanted to host a vampire themed RP on (I guess sorta like Vampire: The Masquerade) or something. She's just trying to figure whether it would be a better setting if it were modern day or if it were in a medieval setting. If something besides that, I'm leaving a third option, so let us know what you have in mind.

I'd go mideival with it since there's more potential for spookiness there. Just be careful though not to get too cliche with it. There are so many thousands of similarly built and textured castles in SL, they've been done to death. Try to do something different.

Why not have it span centuries? back and forth, they are immortal, you know. Parts of storylines in modern day, parts in medieval times.

From: Vicenzo Ludovico Why not have it span centuries? back and forth, they are immortal, you know. Parts of storylines in modern day, parts in medieval times. Would be hard to do that since the people playing, if they were currently in the modern day setting, would know they don't have to worry about dying when it switches back to medieval. Separate characters for each time period can fix that easily enough though I suppose. I like modern day myself, since you can get pretty creepy locations in cities, and the players have to be a lot more careful to avoid detection, what with cellphone cameras, security systems, etc. If the populace at large (not just vampire hunters) ever discovered the true existence of vampires, there is a very real potential for the ability to wipe them out using advanced technology. Of course this is assuming you do use the V:TM world as the baseline. Really, you can do whatever you want with the backstory of how the world and civilization developed, just whatever you think would be the most fun

I think modern-day would give you more options. Also, you could have a lot of fun with the build - I'm thinking a decayed metropolis, gloomy dark streets, and maybe a crumbling old cathedral for an extra gothic touch.

Why not pose another option and do something unique to the genre and set it in a fictional future where such a race thrived because of a... and claimed the world or a portion of it. You have the sky as the limit when you begin to imagine 10 years from now, much less 100 or 1000. There are vampire deaths to consider but in a world of the future, where genetics might be operable to actually morph a human into a real vampire like creature... and my imagination goes wild. If you like the dark/gloomy atmosphere, consider a humanity that all but destroyed itself and vampire culture being a rare remnant of beings who lived past that and now exist in such decayed buildings et al. Or if you like a fantastical idea of a world in a bubble, protected from an outside force...
Because a vampire is originally legend, being partially based on truth and partially based on fanatical imagination, you have so many directions you could take it. You have your imagination and your truths, plus all the past variations on a theme to consider. Building a story line base for an RPG can be as simple as a build that sets an idea in motion to a creation of a whole back story and characters that fit that story. (Your core group.)
I wish you luck and happy hunting.

I used to play in a PnP Whitewolf "Masquerade" group that was set in a post-apocalyptic future. It sounds cliche' now, but this was years ago. It worked very well - I think immortals tend to transplant into whatever epoc you choose quite easily

The modern nights of VTM are much more interesting.

See how the Gibson sim is done.
So you could have a similar Vampire sim, maybe it would be in layers at the bottom most the rat sucking vampires with a medieval setting, and at the top maybe a post modern setting.

Whatever you choose, i'd like to play it once you finish. As long as it's an rpg instead of just the rp... there's plenty of that in SL already

I think you should set it in modern day Miami Beach, a la Tale of the Body Thief. Definitely a vampire's city.

If I were doing it, I'd probably go for both. Split a sim in half...one side modern day, the other side, medieval. A river to divide the halves so the vampires stay on their respective sides.
