I did a little photoshop of the pie menu, giving it an extra level.

This is not a feature request, just an idea I had. ;0 Maybe for when we get more access to the UI system.

Ideas for how it would work:

When you click on an expandable menu item, the child menu jumps to the outside of the parent and the menus lock so you can move your mouse directly to the item you want.

If you selected the wrong menu, you can click back in the parent. Select the original menu tab to close the child menu without activating a new option. Select a new option to activate that one.

If you select another menu from inside the child, the child menu jumps to the inside to become the parent. The new child opens on the outside again. Closing the new child by clicking in the parent would revert to the previous Parent/Child.

With the supposed move to "industry standard" interface elements, I would hope the pie itself would be going away and replaced with a context-sensitive drop-down menu. The only flaw here is the added gestures introduced with 1.11.

As a user of a TabletPC, "Gestures" are one of the first things I turn off. Most likely due to my spastic nature gestures have never been a friend of mine.

I would love to get a nice, tight, context-sensitive drop-down. I run a manual return sandbox, and while I normally use the "About Land..." Objects Tab Dialog to return items, there are plenty of instances where I choose to return a single item which now requires three clicks (right-click on object, "More >" and finally "Return";). Using a standard drop-down we could get all of our options right there, and have plenty of room to expand along with the feature set.

This is not really an attempt at making a better pie menu.. Just an idea I had for when we get more control over the UI.

The number of options they try to cram into the pie menu would bloat a dropdown as well.. It needs some serious tuning.

The pie menu works quite well, I think.

The great thing about the pie menu, and especially the new open/gestural one, is that every menu option is close to your mouse. Your only decision is which direction to move. And the further you get from where your mouse pointer is, the larger the target becomes, making selecting easy. A traditional dropdown menu makes you move your mouse further, skipping over other options. And since the target area for each selection is small, and they don't increase in size as you move your mouse and become sloppier in movement, the chances of selecting the wrong item increases. Especially when having to select sub-menus, which is like trying to push a ball through a maze with a stick.

This is pretty much how I figured it myself, Baba. When one right-clicks to activate the gesture mode you should be able to "flow" your way through the sub-levels without ever having to click another thing. This kind of design you mocked up allows for such fluidness. Though, from a simple design, sub-level menus could expand to the point of filling the entire screen causing overlap and clutter when you consider amount of functionality and word length needing to be implemented. One way to avoid such mess would be to collapse the pre-levels. When you need to go back a level, just gesture inward. The outer level will fade away and the previous level will regrow back out. Not sure if all the snazzy effects are neccessary but you get the picture.

I like it and pretty much agree with Shade, especially about being able to flow through without clicking another thing.

I would actually like to see more pie menu sublevels at a glance, instead of having to navigate through each one. I am a pretty fast "normal menu" navigator, so... yeah.

Nice picture Baba. ;0
