I just got off orientation island, and I'm wondering, what next? Wherever I go there's usually some strange structure, and no one around. I couldn't find any good tutorials, so I don't know what to do. And also, how do you trade things? I know I sound nooby but I don't have the best video card, so the graphics look bad enough as it is, and it doesn't help to find a cube or some shape in the middle of the sky when I'm flying, either. Thanks.

Do a search for 'The Shelter' or 'Yadni's Junkyard', very newbie friendly places to start.

Maybe search for 'money trees' to pick up a few $L's.

If you plan to jump right into building I suggest the 'Ivory Tower of Prims' as well as a plethora of classes that are now available to view in the events calender. A lot of great universities are out there now providing classes for folks at no cost.

Umm ummm lemme think, so many ideas :)

Welcome, Dave! There are a few places that should be helpful in terms of tutorials, help, etc.:

YadNi's Junkyard - Leda (210, 28, 54) - tons of free and almost-freebies.
New Citizens Inc. - Kuula (57, 174, 29) - tutorials, help, classes, etc.
Ivory Tower Library of Primitives - Natoma (210, 164, 27) - building tutorial.
The Shelter - Isabel (44, 244, 79) - friendly club especially for new residents.

There are others, those are just the ones I have notes on in my inventory. You can locate any of these places by just opening the map (click on the minimap in the upper right corner) and typing in the sim name under region; you can then enter the coordinated and TP direct to that spot.

If you want to give an item to another resident, you can either open his profile and drag the item to the line where it says 'drop inventory items here' (or something like that, I'm not in world at the moment) or, in the case of notes, landmarks, photos, etc. you can drag the item from your inventory to right over the person, drop it, and it'll transfer to them.

There are lots of interesting places to see, depending on what you like; I have a bunch on a notecard that I give out on my land, I'll drop you a copy when I'm on next. If you want to find people to talk to, the easiest way is just to look for groups of dots on the map and go there, check out the popular places list, or do a search for things that interest you, as was mentioned above. Good luck!

i think the best thing ever for someone new to do is to simply go to a class. You can find these by going to search than to the events tab. i advise going to the classes only atm so you can adjust to the controls and what not.. but people really are nice once you start talking to them... and please don't let these boards be a representative of in world...

Thanks again for all your helpful posts, but one more question. Someone said how to give items, but how do you exchange with others for L$?

Are you wanting to buy or sell items? If you have an item you want to sell someone (hopefully not a freebie item, that's a bit of a hot spot here) you can just right click the item, open 'edit' and click the more tab, and fill in the blanks for 'set for sale' and the price, plus whether you want to sell copies of it or (if it's not copyable) the original.

If you want to buy an item, it should usually either have a price set in this way, so that you can right click it and choose 'buy,' or it should be in a vendor which will let you click on the item picture and make a quick payment.

Thanks. Pardon all the questions, but do you need to have a place to sell something, or can people buy right off your person? And do things in second life go for what it would cost in US dollars? Like, if something in real-life costs 10 dollars, would it be 10 dollars in the game, but would the price be in Lindens? I don't know exactly how many L$ there are to a USD, but you know what I mean.

Just a question? You already have items to sell in-world? What are you selling?

I've worked pseudo-hard to ensure at least one Mature Popular Place was listed. For the last two months you'd normally find "Clubside's FunZone Sandbox" which features neither sex nor a casino.

Dave, you may find many great people there, some new, some not so new, willing to chat, teach or help. At the very least you can pick up a few free L$.

Click the Search button and select the Popular Places tab. If mature is selected hopefully you'll see it there. If not, click Map and type in Jizo and teleport right there. Also, feel free to use my website to visually browse places that might be interesting enough to check out.

Ah I see

The majority of folks sell from a store or shop which you can rent space to do or make the leap and get your own land
