Had an incident recenty with somebody I know (in the sense that I've spent many hours helping this person since they joined in June) rezzing huge objects in my friend's club. This resulted in her getting ejected from the club group, so I intervened, as diplomatically as possible, to try to get this decision reversed. She said that her son -- who I have very good reason to believe is under eighteen, unless she gave birth at the age of twelve -- logged on to her account and was responsible for the act in question.
After speaking to another of her friend's today, it turns out she didn't give the kid her password, but rather the whole family shares a single account computer, and they're all able to login to a single SL account easily because the 'Remember Password' checkbox is always ticked.
It strikes me that computers won't have accounts setup for individual family members in many homes, because that's how XP Home (and all previous home orientated versions of Windows) work out of the box. This means shared account abuse in Second Life doesn't even require much effort -- indeed, I wonder if many even realise they're abusing the system because it's so easy. So wouldn't it be a good idea to remove this "feature", to deter this kind of access abuse?

Therefore my daughter has to get on my computer to access the teen grid. She has her on login to the comp.. So therefore she can easily log into hers from her side of the comp... Now if they don't have users on their comp, they could simply imput the pw each time they login, it takes a second to do this... and they can change the login name as needed.. takes just a couple of seconds.. I know it does take time, but to prevent accidents or confusion I do think it is a small price to pay in the scheme of things.

From: Oodlemi Noodle It is possible to uncheck it. But many people won't because it's there. And if they're on a shared computer, their kids have instant access to their second life account, without even having to access the password. As happened here. Of course, it won't prevent this kind of abuse -- people will always be stupid enough to share their passwords -- but it would surely reduce it?

So, you want to punish everyone else to prevent a few people from acting stupidly and allowing their login to be available to everyone who accesses their computer? Sorry, I'm afraid there's only so far the game should go to be idiot proof, I'm sure they'd find ways around it. Though it may make it harder for people to lie about someone accessing their account and doing bannable things.

I don't think it should be removed just because some people who know that their computers are accessed by others aren't responsible enough to uncheck the box to prevent their family from screwing with things. Someone's password and account is their responsibility. They need to take the appropriate messures to safeguard it.

Uh, no. If they lack the common sense to uncheck that box when they're in a situation that requires it, why should I suffer for it?

Well I hate to say this because I hate saying anyone is to blame on anything since there are usually so many possiblities... Sigh.. I really really hate pointing something out that could have a negative impact on someone.. But it is an issue that must be addressed It is not Linden's responsilbity to screen every person in detail.. It is the parents responsiblity to know what their children are doing.. correct? Someone correct me if I am wrong.. Therefore, the parent knowing the children and who knows who else can access this and log in, than they are actively allowing that child on the adult grid, because otherwise they would have ensured that the child could not log onto their account. I heard about this as well, and I think it is a tragic, and mistakes do happen, we all make them... Maybe if the person could show that they took preventative steps to correct this problem they would let her back in?

OK, appreciate the different responses here. I agree with many opinions expressed, but am surprised it would be considered a 'punishment' to remove that checkbox. I guess I'm so accustomed to typing passwords in all kinds of systems on a daily basis...that I didn't realise just how crucial the 'remember password' was to some people. Thanks for the reality check. And Volatile, I'm afraid my diplomacy wasn't appreciated. It all blew up in my face in what turned out to be my first major SL dramafest. I guess I just reached the next level in this metaverse.

It's silly to completely remove that feature. It's a reasonable convinience. If someone thinks there's a risk of someone else logging on as them, then they can uncheck it. If someone is looser with it, there's no reason to think someone like their kids wouldn't know their password anyways.
A feature I would like to see is a "remember me" box. I have two accounts, one of which I keep private from RL friends. When I know someone else who might open SL is going to use my computer, I always log in as the public one so I know that's what it will remember. I wish there was a way that I'd never have to worry about the private account being remembered in that box. I understand that if the person was being nozy they could go look at my cache folder and track down any other names I logged in as (and probably 100 other ways,) but I'd think it'd be nice to be able not to automatically display it.
