Philip, et al at Linden Labs,
I would like to publicly thank you for the compromise you implemented to the complaints about open enrollment. I was quite vocal in expressing my fears about the changes you made in enrollment and wishing for a roll back. What you have implemented plus your promised changes have relieved my fears and I would like to thank you very much for the quick response.
No system is going to be perfect, and now there are complaints about the changes, but I personally think this is a good compromise between the needs of Linden Labs and the needs of the residents.

It wasn't a compromise... it was a preplanned tactic to beef their numbers
If they would have used the technology and letting everyone know they'll be collecting info from our computers first, then they wouldn't have had thousands upon thousands of 'new users'...

I think you are attributing far more foresight then is warranted. Yep, it was a numbers bump, especially for the international market which isn't as credit card suffused as the US (cf. The Phil on CNET). Then oops, our old grid crashers are back, damn, uhhhh, how about MAC tracing because a grid crasher won't have US$10 to spend on a new NIC or $0 to spend on a MAC change. Yeah, let's try that. That's probably closer to the sequence of events, but I'm just a customer, I don't know anything.

I would say it's a combination of factors, but one of the big factors was the discussions on the subject here in the forums.
That's the advantage of the forums, to LL and to the rest of us. Ideas can be explored, and effects examined. It's the old two heads are better than one effect (hmmm, has anyone made a Zaphod Beeblebrox avatar yet?).

From: Marla Truss I would like to publicly thank you for the compromise you implemented to the complaints about open enrollment. As far as I know, the only thing they've actually implemented yet is a field on the profile that tells people if you've provided LL with payment info. And they have created a hash row to identify our computers. That's it. - We still don't have land tool enhancements, including a way to ban unverified accounts. - We still don't have additional group functional tiers that we can use to enforce parcel security without giving people rights to sell our land. - We still don't have a way to mute push scripts from other avatars. - Banned residents can still rez prims on land from which they are banned. - The ban list limit remains at 50. - The PVP auto-report was nerfed, meaning we can't tell who attacked us when we try to file ARs. - AR investigation and enforcement is still unsatisfactory, even after the PVP auto-report was nerfed. - The police blotter remains completely useless to us residents. From: someone I was quite vocal in expressing my fears about the changes you made in enrollment and wishing for a roll back. What you have implemented plus your promised changes have relieved my fears and I would like to thank you very much for the quick response. Marla, I hope I can become that optimistic. I agree they're making the right moves now but the fact remains that these are moves they should have made weeks prior to lifting the registration requirements, not after some of us have been subjected to 3 weeks of almost ceaseless griefing attacks.

They could have if they were perfect gods, but last I looked this wasn't a god game Did they predict all of the effects of the change when they made it? Probably not. Like most people, one looks at the positive effects of a decision and minimize the negative effects. And no one is immune to the effect, look at Bush got into this war in Iraq, many predicted what has happened, but those negative warnings were minimized. So now that the negative effects are obvious, LL is searching for solutions. Is this the best way to run an airline? No. But it is what happens in the real world, time and time again. To me, what is important is LL has shown they will admit to and then try to correct problems.
