I work at a place currently where the managers try to get away with as little workforce as possible, making us do more than we should be doing.
Is LL just understaffed right now? I mean its possible since there has been a huge population increase lately. With this huge population increase, I'm sure the number of ARs and Bug reports just went through the roof. I kind of wonder if they think to themselves, OMG 1,000 bug reports now what? Makes me wonder if they are dealling with some really bad days and bad headaches lately.
It doesn't help with all of the actually problems lately either.

They need more QA testers for sure.

This may be the single biggest problem in their development process.

Well, if you want to get crazy amounts of creative energy out of your knowledge workers, it's a good practice in theory. I have known (and worked in) several small dev shops who did something similar on a smaller scale, and it can work fantastic.

The unfortunate reality, though, is that there is an awful lot of "last mile" shit that *nobody* wants to work on that is nevertheless necessary. Perhaps they should revise the policy to include certain mandatory "work on the priorities" time... I do not have a clear memory of whether that was included, and am too tired to look, but I don't remember this idea being specifically called out in the Tao.

All in all, despite the frustrations I've had with the recent updates, I have tremendous respect for the LL development team(s). I can also tell you that despite the rampant hostility towards LL here on the Forums, I'd absolutely love to work there!

OP: I think they are overworked, if not understaffed, because they have taken on a tremendous challenge and I find it hard to imagine that there will *ever* be enough great developers on the team as long as they are breaking new ground.

They need to drop that 70's throwback, beanbag mentality.
I really woundn't mind if SL had the word Beta written all over it, because then we can expect excessive updates, bugs, offline grid etc.

SL is apparently a finished product though and people are putting their money into it, so all these problems shouldn't really be happening.

Well it looked like they were nicely filling out the facility they owned when I visited. It did not seem like 10 people running the whole show. It was quite a high number of people.

Now does this make them well equipped to handle the so and so pulled my hair, jimmy took my chewing gum, sally says my mom is a slut kind of ARs? Hell no. I think AR is the biggest liability LL's got right now. I can not imagine what their AR inbox must look like. And I dont want to.

As for development, I keep telling myself, we gotta give them more time to sort out the rippling effects from the latest feature updates. I personally dont care about rippling water, but the lighting was a major improvement. I dont care about flexiprims but hey people love em so let them have em. I wish the vehicles would work better, and I wish texture cache would always work great as opposed to working good some of the time and not so good most of the time. I wish I could build offline: A mirror of my parcel gets downloaded to my client and I sign off of the grid, and build away -- when I can synch my lot or any other lot with what's on my machine. I dont know why this is so hard given that the actual rendering of objects is still happening on my machine.

but these are all simply that, wishes....

The Short Version

Dude In Charge: I think the time has come to expand our small universe, allowing everyone and anyone to enter in freely, and driving the "value" of our product through the roof.

Underlings: Oh cool! Dude In Charge has never steered us wrong before!

Dude In Charge: Soon we will be able to sell our product for tens of millions when the population reaches 1 meellion users. Muhahahahahaha!

some time later...

Dude In Charge: Excellent, population has risen over 300% in less than one year's time. My (somewhat) evil plan is reaching fruitation! Now, to sweaten the deal. I will release all the promised upgrades and improvements as quickly as possible, so that my competition will have no chance at ever drawing the media's attention again, and my customers will love me... But, more importantly... I can sell out to someone like Microogle Bell-Cola.

Underlings: But, Sir! We have been working on these upgrades for years now, there are still several bugs that need to be worked out!

Dude In Charge: Just give them what they want anyways. The sheer extacy of getting everything in quick succession will make them happy, and they will ignore most of the bug reports, and say how great we are, for we gave them everything we always promised!

Meanwhile, far beneath stately Wayne Manor...

Batman: Blast! I still cannot IM my buddies from email! Not even my high-tech arsenal of crime-fighting tools can save us from this villany!

Robin: Holy Code Batman!
