Did LL change the ripple water textures again? Whereas before I was getting a plasma goop of ripples and a bright blue texture at night, I'm now getting a plasma goop with a pitch black texture at night. While I could be hallucinating this change, I suspect a change was made.
I know the idea was to help increase performance while ripple water was on, but when the result is a worse look to the water, the help is pointless. The whole point of the ripple water is its aesthetic appeal, and if you lose that in exchange for increased performance, no one is going to want to use it anyway.
I used to have the ripple water always on before these changes. Now I never do. Of course, this is no different than when I had an older graphics card that simply couldn't display ripple water, so I can act like the feature doesn't exist again. But I have to wonder if there's *anyone* out there who is content with the way ripple water looks now?

I agree, it looks worse now. I haven't had time yet to observe it at a lot of different times, etc., but what I've seen so far looks worse. I used 'force sun' to make it noon the other day, and the water looked so bright on the surface that I couldn't even see ripples; it was much too bright, like an overexposed photo.
I haven't seen it at sunrise/sunset yet, but it does look darker at night. I was thinking about buying some fish to put under my dock, but for now I think I'll wait and see if the water gets fixed. I'd hate to have to turn off ripple water again, but as far as I've seen, that's the only way to get rid of the over-brightness.

[RANT] What I don't get is when it first came out it was one of the few things they did that *everyone* loved, yet they wrecked it for no reason almost immediately after. A few people complained that it slowed them down but they were not that upset about it, they just didn't turn it on unless they were alone on a beach somewhere. Then they changed it to that horrible blue plasma-goop (which almost no one liked), and left it there even though it was only marginally faster? To make things worse, when people complained about the blue plasma effect, they released some techie explanation of how you could get the old water back by swapping some arcane file on your HD, so probably three or four techies and most of the Lindens are looking at the *old* water, leaving the average user stuck with the goop! Worse than that, this whole debacle is the result of a single person (a Linden) fooling around with the ripple water. He/she asked no-one, and had authority from no-one to do it, and no-one involved probably even reads the forum so they are likely unaware that anyone is mad at them. I don't want to learn all about my *.ini files just to get something that should be there in the first place. [/RANT]

Ripple Water
03-16-2006 09:03
I run a big ol' Mac G5 desktop and the Radeon 9800 Pro for Mac Special Edition (256 MB). Yep, and it recognizes the AGP slot. I can use Ripple Water, but I seldom do. Especially at sunset / sunrise, where the Ripple Water effect makes water surfaces look like the site of a major oil spill....
Yes, it costs a few FPS, but usually enable it for just for something different at times.
Minor annoyance IMHO... BTW, any word on SL Client 2.0 and Havok?

The moon's reflection in ripple water looks much better! Instead of just a mirrored graphic of the moon on the water, it's dispersed light on the water's surface. Me likes!

From: Dianne Mechanique Worse than that, this whole debacle is the result of a single person (a Linden) fooling around with the ripple water. Yeh, he shoulda never done that, and then we wouldn't have ripple water at all and there'd be nothing to complain about! The thing is, he also asked people what they'd like him to do about it, and said he'd be making more changes... but they didn't happen. I wonder if he got told to leave it as is.
