Why 1.8 was a smart move!

if you make a few very focused changes to the client, like turning back on the p2p switch and enabling the v-card side pixel shader, and give it + 0.1 version upgrade label rather than a +0.0.1 label, it will be the best customer relations move to demonstrate that you can indeed make seamless upgrades!

much better to make a few clean upgrades at frequent intervals then many sloppy major changes that run the game play to a grind once every quarter.

thumb up!

Well said, and agreed. Now if they'd just grow some balls and do something about people attacking the grid - which causes some of us hours of work and money every time it happens. I can't believe only a 2 week suspension was handed down. PATHETIC AND NOT GOOD ENOUGH, LL.

Definitely. I flew around for a bit and tested some stuff out, and lo and behold so far it all still works the same! Which made me happy.

Then I decided to teleport home, but I pulled up the map and typed in "Swain", "150", "100", "600" and lo and behold, I was falling! At about 500m high I logged out and logged back in, and still was up over 300m falling. And it was a glorious, wonderful and empowered type of falling, telling me I'd never have to fall again when someone up in the sky offered me a TP. :D

Not only was the upgrade smooth, but it was following a grid-attack.

Well done!

Hasn't there been some sort of attack the night before an update the last couple of times? Or is my memory failing me again?

this may be the least amount of change in a patch ever. Calling it 1.8 is a pretty transparent attempt at marketing.

I will say for once performance went up instead of down, due to textures not reloading everytime you turn around.

Ripple effect makes my water vanish. I have a 256mb 9600xt card.
I've offered people telleports that sent them to my home landmark instead of to me.

Still, the best "point release" *shifty eyes* ever.

I can't get over how much I enjoy P2P. I think I saw more of SL last night than I have in my entire time in Second Life (including Wuvme Karuna with no hair when she first P2P stalked me and was not fully rezzed, which was terrifying). I went shopping for Christmas decorations for my stores, and then blipped around to each one and started decorating. Those who claim P2P is harmful to the small vendors could not be more wrong. I discovered so many stores and designers I had never heard of when I was out shopping last night, and bought stuff from a lot of them. Now that I am not forced to go anywhere, I am much more likely to explore my environment than I was when I was arbitrarily forced to go to a telehub and then bombarded with crap.

Great upgrade - the water effects are also wonderful. P2P does need a few more privacy controls to perfect it, as P2P stalking is way too easy now. I think it is due time that Linden Lab finally makes tracking someone on the map optional, or something we can grant to individuals, like modify permissions. Having anyone on your friend list be able to track you is just strange.

Yes, it's disconcerting. Thank you Cris, for asking if I was pixel slapping before teleporting to me. Very decent of you.

P2P is a lot of fun and just so much easier. And I also noticed textures are visible much faster. Yay!

Now if we could figure out why Wu keeps crashing...

We're trying to make more frequent point releases with fewer changes. The main reason for this is that we've modified how we handle new feature development in the lab so that features that are finished don't have to wait for those that aren't. You can expect future point releases to be similar to 1.8 as far as the number of changes.

Alan told me on IRC this is likely because a two week suspension automatically puts your account up for peer review, so the community can decide whether or not to permaban them.

.... Having anyone on your friend list be able to track you is just strange.
Contrarian again I guess...

I dont find this strange at all. It's just like in RL.

I wish it was the other way as well. There are lots of people I have never met even though I have talked to them on IM or the forum. I think it would be *fantastic* if you could look up absolutely anyone (not just friends) and be able to find out where they are on the map. (again just like RL)

The only problem here is people without manners who just burst in on you and the solution for that is... get some manners!

(obviously Christiano has them :))

Heh.

When I wrote that I was thinking about the fact that you can look anyone up in a phone book and walk right over to their house; that you dont need to be friends with someone for that.

Apon reflection it's a pretty strained analogy though in that they might not be home and there is no way to look them up after that. This must be one of those extremely rare rare times that I make no sense in what say I. :D

Apologies.

Perhaps instead of the ability to locate friends, the thing to do would be to mimic the RL phonebook and make everyones "home" point findable. That way you would not know if Ingrid was home, but you could go over and camp out on her doorstep if you wanted to see her, even if you were not "friends."

Well this is all fun and dandy (dont mis understand i like 1.8 too ;)) but whats going to happen with the issue of 2.0? They started this "upping the number" scheme kinda late in the game. I can only asume that the monumentus "Version 2.0" title will still hold more weight then any other version update. If not does this mean will see SL Version 4.0 by next christmas? O.o

Just a thought.

But, but but.. You can opt out of being listed.. And if people want their home point findable they can put it in their picks in profile..

I'm split on the map feature..

In one way I like poping up and suprising people when I see they're alone.. And I don't have anyone in SL I wouldn't mind mapping me..

But I do see it could easily be abused and people may not like it..

I always said I wanted permissions for calling cards.. Like objects.. Except instead of Copy/Mod/Transfer.. Maybe.. Map & Mod Permissions?

Version numbers aren't decimals. We'll see 1.9, 1.10, 1.11, etc.

Furthermore, as Second Life goes to the Metaverse, and this becomes an open platform, Linden Lab risks lawsuit in court and [attachment culling] will, I repeat WILL be reverse in court.

Well I was kind of just thinking out loud on the home address lookup thingie, and trying to cover my ass on the stupid way I phrased it the first time. I guess if they did that people would start listing "fake" home adresses anyway.

There are certain people I konw I can burst in on when tehy are alone, but generally I ask first and I think if everyone used simple manners like that, there woudn't be a problem.

Like if you go to someones house (on the ground) and you can see two dots and that they are both at 500 metres, it's kind of common sense to just come back another time.

Ive been thinking the same thing Cristiano.

When I first came to SL i used to wonder how some people would show up everywhere I was. I thought it was coincidental. and believe it or not these guys never told me they were "mapping" me.

I really, really hope they implement this and soon.

It is just strange.

I so love the P2P Thanks LL, now how about you fix it so we don't have anymore attacks on the grid ;)
