I hope Im not being against the rules, but I suddenly went curious about what residents think/feels about Linden Labs, if you think LL is a bunch of people that build SL only for the profit it might raise or that they build SL for the fun of it and thrill of inovation.

I think those two choices arw a bit constrictive.

All businesses want and NEED to make money, unless it's some tax write-off front for a millionaire.

So they are, of course, in it to make money. But I think they also want to make it fun and creative. I think Philip and crew probably did have alot of fun with it in the early days.

However, I believe that it's past that fun, whimsical stage, and is now very much a business that is dedicated to making as much money as possible. That is the pattern for most small businesses that grow and suceed.

Agreed.

I really like what Linden Labs has done for us in terms of making Second Life as entertaining as it is. Face it, if it weren't, none of us would be here.

However, the poll seems like it is trying to lead people towards an already predetermined outcome that may not be close enough to the truth for the majority of people.

Exactally, I think it's both. Money is important, but I think many of them love what they do. I think Torley would work for LL for free! :)

Both. Look at the way we walk, stand and move without an AO. No one could've thought that looked good or any kind of natural. So, they made a platform that we could build upon and they could profit from.

i agree with most of the answers here, they have to make money or else, there would be no second life. however, have they started to get greedy in making money and do not care about the customers? do they think that they dont have to keep us pleased as paying customers that they have enough people to keep them sustained and still make money? of course we play to have fun, other play for the business, but it doesnt matter which mmo game you play, you still have people that play for fun, and those that play for profit. and it seems that those that play for profit in these games though the minority have the control over where things go developmentaly with the game. so maybe the question should be does LL now try to make the game fun for its players or make it more business friendly for those trying to make a profit? of course reguardless of if they are in it for fun for themselves they have to a profit in order to keep things going.

I seem to remember seeing Philip saying a while back that LL wasn't making a profit at the time, but were concentrating on hiring more staff with the more money they took in.

That was before the $11m grant, don't know what the status is now.

this is just silly with the way the choices are presented of course they are doing this to make money any one who thinks other wise is delusional. Not that this is a bad thing this is what any business is supposed to do.

i will say if you have ever heard or read or talked to Phillip about why he made second life it was not all about making money. Second Life was a dream of Philips for a very long time and this is his baby and he will not do any thing to hurt second life. however some of his decisions may not be well received by some but you can be assured every decision that Phillip makes is for the betterment of the LL and second life as a whole and by doing so to make money after all this is a business.

He said that it's very possible for them to start getting a profit with what they are doing right now. They wanted to put the 8 mil they got aside incase strong competition comes and they need to step it up quickly.
