Thanks Karsten, your suggestions got forwarded around internally. Some of your points like C) and E) are on the Big List of Things to Do. F) annoys me badly. Which brings us to A) because we sure are looking for a UI expert:

Anyone know any UI experts in the San Francisco area? Stuff them in a sack and get them down to LL Headquarters ASAP!

Most of those jobs have unrealisticly high application requirements and are full of fancy language for nothing. I wonder if they ever hire 'normal people' to do 'normal jobs'?

I need to ask: What are "normal" people? What are "normal" jobs?

I agree with you Lewis... I think they have very high academic expectations, as though those were a guarantee of high quality staff.

Thing is, I think it is demonstrably true that a lot of SL residents are highly intelligent, but not necessarily highly qualified. And I think that the reason for that is that creativity and innovation are not really a very strong feature of most academic programmes.

At the moment, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Richard Branson, would all fail to get any of the jobs listed in the LL situations vacant, due to the fact that they all dropped out - or never went to university at all.

See John Taylor Gatto;s essay on it:
http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-6z6IhP08cqXp9kfshYQPv87gCfJyFg--?cq=1&t=t&p=446

I have been collecting information about the backgrounds of innovative thinkers and entrepreneurs, and this is quite usual. So despite Bill Gate's passion for sending everyone else to University, the people with the highest level of creativity and business nous tend not to go....

Maybe they should begin taking more chances on promoting residents to Linden status, despite lack of qualifications. After all, two of the most skilled and innovative scripters I know in SL don't have any formal qualifications in programming or coding at all as far as I am aware. They know LSL and the UI back to front though....

It comes down to numbers, and time, unfortunately. Although there maybe people without the desired qualifications who are more than capable to fill an advertised position, finding them is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. As soon as you advertise a decent position as having low requirements, you can safely assume that you will get thousands upon thousands of applications, with 99.99% of them being worth less than the paper they're written on.

Any company would be foolish to let their strict qulaification/experience requirements get in the way of employing someone ideal that they happen to chance across, but advertising a decent position without any requirements is not feasible, unfortunately.

I don't know about UI, but I personally think I could be a very good community manager. Sadly, I can't meet their education requirement, partly due to past mistakes and partly due to simply not having been born into much money.

I worked as a temp assistant to someone in human resources once, he did all the hiring for the company. I found out that a standard practice was to list qualifications for a position as being higher than they truly needed to be. The company would for example list in the job requirements that an applicant needed to have a bachelors degree but would then hire someone who didn't have the degree but had years of experience instead. Don't let the fact that you don't look qualified on paper prevent you from applying for any position you know you can do well. You never know what the employers are really looking for until you give it a shot.

What I found really disturbing was 'Entrepreneurial spirit; start-up experience a must'

From experience that means ridiculously long hours, ridiculously low salary, ridiculous promises of a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Oh yes - sometimes it pays off. More often than not it doesn't. Sensible people with an eye to a secure career generally run a mile from ads with phrases like that in them.

And from the prospective employers viewpoint, well, if you pay peanuts you run a real risk of getting monkeys.

He needs to put in charge, not just hired. In respect to interface design, perhaps the BLOTTD should get replaced with the TCLOC, Tiger Crossing's List Of Commands. ;)

As far as the Tiger Crossing / Arito Cotton game Deus Via goes, I'm fairly certain Arito did the UI graphics (though I'm not sure who did the actual UI design). Also, Arito was the creator of the fabulous Luskwood Creatures avatar HUD -- the first furry-av HUD, as far as I'm aware.

I'm putting in a nomination for Arito Cotton. :)

You know what? You inspired me. I dropped a resume. I guess the worst I can get is no response. ;)

Why are my ears burning???

I did go out to San Francisco and met with Philip and a number of very cool (and smart) people at Linden Lab, but at this time, there are no plans to make a "Tiger Linden" account in the dataserver.

It would be nice to get my hands on their user interface, though, if only from a pure player perspective. It's been getting better over the years, but it could stand more improvements. (Or a complete re-write, if a new direction is desired.)

Beatfox, in the Deus Via UI, Arito made the icons, I did the rest -- graphics, design, and programming. The avatar vendor is WAY well designed, though... Arito is a master of many talents!

Thanks for the vote of confidence, everyone. Enough attention like this and LL and I might talk again. Who knows what the future holds...?

Ah, sorry, my bad. Kudos to you for some super UI work there!

And yes, Ari is quite the master at many skills. Even if he's too modest to admit it. :p

Yes, go for it! I do think you'd be a valued member of the team there.

Besides, we could always use more furry Lindens. :D
