In the preview grid, you can click on a folder, one that starts with "A" for example - then if you want to advance down the list to a folder that starts with "O", such as the Object folder, press the "O" key.

It's implemented in a crippled manner; after you press the "O" key, and it goes to the first folder that starts with "O", you can't then press "P" to get to the P folders, until you click on the folder that starts with "O".

It suggests the possibilty of being able to go to a folder by typing the name of the folder, advancing to the first folder that matches what you have typed so far. Wouldn't that be nice? Just type obj, and be at the object folder?

Or do it like some list selection systems do, press O and go the first O folder, keep pressing O and advance to the next.

Well, even its present funky state, when you have enough folders, being able to get to the first main level one that starts with a certain letter might be useful, so I hope this little note helps somebody.

Wait, they changed it? I'd been doing that for ages.

This also works with object! Just start to type the name of any item in your inventory, and if it's in a folder that's open, it'll select that item. Very useful function. :D

I think there should have an option to split the inventory in two: one for objects and another for tree so if I wanted to drag some object from some folder into another would sweat a lot less.
Plus some lock option would be cool, like expand/colapse lock so I won´t have to colapse folders that I am not interested using at the moment. There´s a lot of objects that I keep for backup and I don´t want them showing in my inventory all the time, plus putting them into a Chest type of object isnt very practical.

Did you know about the new window option? Open your inventory and go to File-> New Window and it'll open 2 inventory windows! :p

I was just thinking the same thing...

I had the feeling this was an old thing, just not the way I was used to doing it.

You know, when you start out, there's very few main level folders. At some point one might start playing tricks to make folders appear at the top by using punctuation that appears before letters at the start of a folder name. As time goes by, one gets folders from other people that also use the same trick, sometimes with 5 or 6 asterisks at the start, like the tricks people played to get listings at the top of the classifieds when sorted by name. If one is lazy and unmethodical like me, the inventory just becomes a total mess. For some reason, my ten thousand item inventory takes many minutes to load, and sometimes just doesn't finish loading at all.

You try to work on it, try to consolidate things and arrange them in a logical manner, and, oh, say you try to drag a folder into another folder. As you drag over folders on the way, they open up; when you get to the folder you want to put the dragee in, the destination folder opens up, and the by the time you let off on the mouse button your cursor has moved to a subfolder. Various things of a similar undesirability occur that drive me nuts when working with the inventory, to the point where I just basically gave up. If I can't remember the item I want's name, it might as well not be there at all.

So I may have forgotten this elementary aspect of how the inventory system works because I try to stay out of it as much as possible; me and the inventory get along better the less we see of each other.

I was thinking of starting a poll asking the question "Is it humanly possible to devise an inventory system that is so easy to use that you would actually use it keep your inventory in sensible and useful manner?"

I think I would have to answer no to that question.
