Hi,

Would it maybe be interesting if there were an island somewhere that anyone (who isn't banned, perhaps) could stop by, join an open access group, and add to, delete from or edit "the build"? Has this been done before? It might be fun! Or, it might just be silly. :)

Yeah that'd be cool, not sure how'd you make sure people deed things to group though.

also, it would probably get a little unstructured rather quick.

I guess that whoever maintains the island could just give instructions to deed everything to group, and regularly return stuff that isn't.

I think I'm going to put this one on my "list of cool stuff that I want to do in a few months", and give it a shot if nobody has seen the thread and run with it in the mean time. My list seems to be constantly delayed by RL and SL work though, so I'm not sure if it'll really be a few months. :) (I did finally get to my community park in Dalton a little while back if anyone wants to check it out though! :))

At any rate, does anyone have any ideas for how this 3D wiki island could best work? Hit me with anything! :)

You know, I read this as "Second Life is a 3D Artistic Wiki" and thought "that's a good way of putting it".

Sounds like a sandbox with a bit more permanence.

Yeah kind of, I guess. :) But yet, not really. :) I'm thinking of something more like.. it's one project spanning one sim.. but not a defined project.. or something.. :) But rather than a bunch of individual temporary projects, everyone can stop by and add to, delete from or modify the project.. by joining the group that all of the prims are to be deeded to.

Well I think it would be interesting to have one within the platform. ;)

I like this idea... had hoped to do something like this last april but didn't get much interest .... I imagine you'd have to do it based on a group... i.e. if you want to participate in the "living 3D art" you'd ask to join. People who abused the priviledge (crashing sim, excessive physics, bad scripts, rezzing waaaayyy too many objects, deleting *everything*) would be booted from group.

what would be the best way to allow people to delete? obviously the entire group can't give mod-rights to each other, nor can everyone be officers under the current system.

Is it possible for members of the same group to delete group prims? I'm not too familiar with group deeded objects yet.

Yes it can be done.
I'm in love this this idea. I hope one day it comes to fruition, I'd love to be a part of it!

A similar idea. I don't think this one got off the ground. The big issue with doing this is permissions. I think it'd be possible but would require a lot of work by admins making sure permissions are correct and chasing up people when they aren't.

Shouldn't be any need to chase after people really. It can just be made one of the rules that everything must be deeded to the wiki group, and anything that isn't can be mass returned by admins a couple of times daily. Repeat offenders could be added to the island's ban list to ensure that the build stays consistantly group-deeded.

The idea is sometimes called an Exquisite Corpse.

I just wanted to chime in and say that something similar to this has been done before but it was impermanent. The SL Burning Life celebration (homage to Burning Man) featured a "build" like this where everyone was able to rez and add things. If I remember right, it did render some interesting results. :)
I'm not a scripting or permissions guru so I don't know if this is possible but here's my idea for how to make something like this work:
Set up kiosks at regular intervals throughout the island sim that hand out primitives. Allow potential contributors to choose from all the basic prim shapes and have the kiosk rez a specially scripted prim or a prim with a certain permission set that allows them to modify it. Any other prims besides the ones rezzed by the kiosk would be auto-returned or deleted at regular intervals. Have the kiosk record who it has rezzed prims for and limit the number it will give to any one individual (setting this number at 1 or 2 might give some interesting results). Then invite everyone to try it out and see what emerges.
Can any scriptors out there tell me if a system like this is even possible? Thanks.
