Okay, I was kind of wondering about this, but today something happened that brought the matter to a head.

I was involved with a young lady in a place appropriate for this, and there was this guy running around bothering people. He came up to us and ran into us repeatedly while demanding the young lady's favors. He spouted personal insults, (regarding avatar features) and began calling her names when she turned him down firmly. As for me, the most polite reference he made was that she should dump me and go with a "real" man. We finally had to TP out to get away from him.

He would not have been able to get away with being half so rude in RL, and I don't think he should in SL, either. If anyone deserved to be knocked into next Tuesday, it was him. I consider running into us repeatedly as a form of attack in SL.

I don't want to carry a weapon; just as in real life, I think weapons can get a person into conflicts just because they have one. I'm also not looking to cause trouble for anyone. But dang it, in some situations, a good punch in the nose is in order.

And yes, I know I could probably report him for this. I've never been much of a tattle-tale, though.

So, the point of this rather long-winded post is this: Are there any forms of unarmed self defense available in SL?

Shields and HUD/scanner based combat systems. A few weeks back I had to use one to combat a rather bothersome griefer interupting me and my then girlfriend.

Your first line of defense should be the parcel/estate owner or his designated security managers. People like that can be ejected and banned if the owner is around.

Barring that, you did the right thing by TPing away. Note the name, capture the log, AR him if you feel it's appropriate and send an IM to the parcel owner so they know what happened.

If you're looking for places to play, there are dozens of them around SL. Don't feel like you have to sit there and take it.

You could. Most are going to run you anywhere from $350 to $1000L. They're not cheap. I personally use Psyke's personal security HUD and Burke's Multifool Orbiter. Both are quality products but there are lots of others.

You could try Kyran's(?) orbiter. It's called the eradicator, it's small, silent and cheap at 50l. It's great for people who arent worth much trouble.

At the risk of sounding like an advertisement, i would recommend Psyke's Personal Defense HUD based radar and movelock. It's not a shield. It won't help you against push weapons. But is is a very good radar (I use it when hosting events, it's much faster than my Multi-Gadget) and it's movelock will prevent you from being pushed around by jerks who use the walking-push. It's funny to watch them when they walk into you and you don't move. That try to push, fail, take a step or two back all confused, try again, sometimes several times. Then go away to find someone else that they actually CAN push.

Again, this hud will NOT protect you from a griefer with a push weapon. but if you see one of those, simply sit down.

IMO the best non-armed self defense is to just ignore the person (As in not say anything that would let them think they are bothering you) I have done this many times and they always move on to someone else quickly because I'm not giving them the entertainment they want. If you waste your time trying to reason with them or telling them off, or finding some sort of revenge you get too involved in the negative and it will effect how much fun you have in secondlife. Everyone seems to have their panties in a bunch over the whole griefer thing, and I think that the more you try to stop or reason with these people the worse it gets.
Whats even better than ignoring them is to IM everyone else in the room so they can be in on the joke too, and if the person doesn't move along and you don't want to leave either, the mute button is awesome.

I use psitek and protek as they are fairly unobtrusive.

It's called the mute button.

When he realizes that you are not listening to him, he will leave to find someone he can bother.

well.. if you feel like spending some serious cash on a Shield/HUD based combat system I would recommend aubreTEC's proTEC/psiTEC system. Use it myself alot when in sandboxes.. has movelock (described in a post above), nophys mode (no pushbased weapons can touch you and you can still move around albeit a bit jerky), Cage, mandatory orbiter etc.
Don't use the weaponry that much other than when playing around with friends, but the shielding is superb.
Unfortunently it is very expensive... you have to think it through if you really need it.. there are a lot cheaper systems that has nophys protection.

Force Prophersies is another good one, isn't that expensive but it is command driven unfortunently no HUD, nophys movement, shielding and has a good push and pull action going on too.. and a fun cage that you can click-hold-ctrl move around if you want to mess with the griefer a bit too.. plus it is "THE FORCE" *smiles*

There's a pretty cool AO sold ingame that addresses hand to hand combat. IT is a martial arts AO that lets you punch and kick people and has a push effect to it you can control.

This AO come in 3 different versions (all sold in the same package).

1) wear to play around with friends. Just mainly for showing off your moves.
2) wear to spar with a partner. Has limited push effect and is good to use when you and a consenting friend want to have some fun.
3) wear to beat the shit out of someone and knock them into Tuesday.

I got mine at LostDog for around L$400. I don't remember the name offhand cause I don't really use it extensively. I initally bought it to fend off guys who wouldn't leave me alone (Ostrich is a good thing for this though and I LOVE that).

Check into it and see if this is something you want to get and learn about using.

No. Seriously, if they don't behave, and you don't want to leave...

Hi Sav,

Thanks, I bought it. This seems to be exactly what I was looking for.

Couple of questions, though. The "help" file turned out to be the sales notecard.

Do I have to have an opponent to use the moves? I went into a field outside the shop, installed it, and stood there bobbing up and down in a karate kid stance without being able to execute any moves.

Second, how do I select my target? I would hate to hit the wrong person.

I would have played around with it more to find out, but it seems right now that I would have to A) Ask someone if they would mind me practicing on them, and B) The grid went down.

Thank you, Savonah Madonna, I've been wanting something like that.
