As a new SL resident I am still enjoying exploring and finding new things to see. I enjoy maps and have a good sense of direction, and I like to always know where I am in relation to the rest of the world.
One thing that bothers me about SL is that there don't seem to be good geographical names in use. The sims are named of course, and that seems to have just about used up the creativity of whoever is in charge of that.
But in the real world everything geographical has a name: cities, rivers, lakes, countries, mountains, continents. Here we get by with "the northern continent" and "the mainland". No offense to anyone, but that seems awfully unimaginative! Continents should have names. So should their main regions and geographical features: the ring lake in the northern continent, the snowy region in the southwestern part of the mainland. Just look at the map and you can see all kinds of regions which deserve their own names.
And the biggest lack of all is a name for the world we are all exploring and living in. The world, the land and oceans and islands, should have a name. You can't really call it "second life", that is not a name for a land. World of Warcraft takes place in the land of Azeroth, and I think many online games do go to the trouble of naming their worlds. We should have a name for where Second Life takes place. Some people call it the Metaverse, but that name should probably be considered taken.
I'd like to see the SL community put their creative minds together and come up with names for the continents, the oceans and other geographical features, then just start using them. Over time, well-chosen names will hopefully come into widespread use and perhaps could even start appearing on the map. I hope people will chime in with suggestions for the kinds of names they would like to see!
