You have to convert your movie files into a Quicktime format and upload them to a server. After that, you get the URL of your movie, which would be something like:

http://www.mywebspace.com/movie.avi

and put that in the Land tab where you can set the movie and audio stream of your land.

You also have to associate a texture to be the movie screen, drop the texture you want to use in the texture box by where you put the URL in and then put the same texture on a prim. Voila.

Finally, make sure you go to Edit-> Preferences and check the "Play streaming video where available" box.

Note: streaming a movie is very bandwidth-intensive, so check and make sure you have enough bandwidth on your hosting plan to cover the size of the movie, or the size twice over if you're going to be watching it with a friend.

If it is in MPEG format, you have to transcode it useing a program such as cleaner or procoder. There may be some cheaper programs floating around to transcode, just do a google search for MPEG to QT transcode.
