start movie to disk: clicking it opens a window that gives the different compression options you want, after selecting that it opens up the file save window, after that is finished it starts recording, and until you use stop movie it will keep recording. (btw, it's better to use the shortcuts, and to turn off the userinterface, it records it in the movie

I sort of got it to work, but it was very awkward to use. There is no feeback that video is being captured! And after I used it, the next time I tried to take a snapshot my POV started orbiting my av like crazy, and I had to relog to correct it.

It has never worked for me and I used the steps the Lindens gave and it never even tried to work.. I got a free copy of Mr. Captor and use it to grab video. It is much better since you can capture areas on the screen instead of the entire image to save on disk space.

That's weird, I've never had any problems with it... Maybe it only works if you change to small window size? I've never tried it w/o doing that...

Movie to disk isn't very good, I suggest using FRAPS instead. You will get speed-correct video with sound.

Stone - I've never been able to get Start/Stop Movie to disk to work either.
Huns suggestion is by *far* the best one. I ended up getting Fraps myself thanks to an earlier suggestion of his - and its amazing. And it works for more than just SL - I've used it with winamp to make some cool animated textures.  Check it out at: http://www.fraps.com |

That option never does anything for me either. Strange (and my machine is quite up-to-date on video codecs as I've done some movie editing with Movie Maker and Adobe Premiere).
I use FRAPS as well. Works very well and with any game. Besides, the latest update offers all the options I could need on capture size and quality. Wendel |

It works for me when I use ctrl-shift-A (?) but not when I select it from the menu. Go figure. The quality is okay except that it's very choppy. It seems to not capture enough frames for "realtime" movement.

I've gotten it to work. The main thing to do is use no compression.
It seems that selecting any type of compression causes it to fail. |

What's a FRAPS? FRAPS is a program (see URL above) that can capture screenshots, compute actual framerates and capture videos of about any DirectX game. It runs in the background and is triggered by hotkeys you define. Very handy to capture in-game videos. Wendel |

It's only worked once for me and the framerate was terrible. MOst of the time using Start/Stop Movie does absolutely nothing at all.

It's never worked for me either, I would like to try it.
Why would they bother to put in an option that works so very badly? The programmer who started it saw something shiny and that was the end of that project, I suppose. _____________________
