I subscribe to CGW magazine and was reading an article titled "Online Evolution" in the January 2006 issue (#25 when I came across a small blurb about Second Life. From: someone Linden Lab is doing all kinds of weird genre-bending things in Second Life ( www.secondlife.com), a combination MMO, bulletin board, auction site, and virtual land grab. I'm not sure they portray SL for what it really is, but this was the first time I have seen SL mentioned in this magazine. It was in a sidebox of the main article talking about MMO's that don't follow the traditional fantasy theme.

Thanxies for sharing, Driftwood... I like how SL is described in this as being a combo meal of things, instead of "an online game" (which has worn out its welcome, been there done that etc.).

I subscribe to PC Gamer and Computer Games Magazine, and have seen a couple of similar blurbs.
It's funny you mention this, because I just read a blurb about SL, not ten minutes ago, in January's CGM about SL, also in a side box:
Second Life and Your Tax Dollars
A project funded by the US Department of Homeland Security is part of the core research program of the Emergency Readiness and Response Research center at Dartmouth College's Institute for Security Technology Studies. Researcher Satchmo Protoype gave a presentation on the use of Second Life as a platform for creating synthetic environments for Homeland Secirity.
A couple of months back, SL was highlighted in an article (in PC Gamer, if I remember correctly) about how SL and other MMOE's can possibly help folks address conditions like Asperger's, in which social interaction is affected.
