What's a packet? Data is not sent in a continuous stream, it's divided into chunks known as packets. The reason its not sent continuosly, because any interruption, would cause a crash. After each packet is sent, a smaller packet is returned (aka CRC or Cyclic Redundancy Checksum), which verifies the data which has been received at the client and is ready for more data. Packet loss means, that due to some bottle neck in the system, the data is skipped, hence lag or erratic movement. Most online programs can handle packet loss to some degree, but when it gets bad.......bye bye connection.

What's a packet? Isn't it one of those little envelopes that sweetener comes in? Aimee's been snorting Sweet-N-Low again. P2

Since 1.7, packet loss is a way of life for me. But lately, seems like it is worse. If I go to Find for anything, I'm assured of several moments of it, for instance. coco

For the last few days my packet loss indicator has been full on red for probably 70% of the time. It makes me lag and is just horrid..

Mine's happened for the past three nights. LL blamed my ISP, and my ISP returned the favor. igh: At least I'm okay during the day. Hope they fix whatever it is.

My Charter connection has never shown much loss. My standard Bellsouth/ATT route through GA, TX to CA has been incredibly lossy the past several weeks. Oddly, as Coco noted, it's been worse ever since the 1.7 release. But I think that's coincidental. It's more likely just the telcos' infrastructure falling apart from lack of maintenance due to most of their income being diverted to cable and cell companies.

Packet loss has been fairly significant for the past few months. Here is an old thread in which the problem was discussed in detail. Evidence suggests the problem is at LL's end, particularly given the fact that many users distributed across many different ISP are experiencing similar problems.

There have been some major internet router issues. Almost all of the Midwest couldn't get to most west coast servers yesterday because an ATT router went down and was down about 2 hours. If you have been checking here often the past week or so you know why the internet has sucked so bad. Can't really blame LL this time.

You can if they're talking out both sides of their mouth. Email A: Hello, Thank you for your response. I notice that there is packet loss through most of it, and that the highest is at sl-bb23-sj-10-0.sprintlink.net with an average of over 100. Out of curiosity, when you called your ISP, was it during a time when this problem was going on? Often ISPs are only able to track down such problems while they are occurring. Please respond with any further info you may have. Regards, Email B *just received*: Greetings, Thank you for your inquiry. We have gotten no other reports of such behaviour. It definately suggests this is ISP related or a router in between your connection and Second Life's which is out of ours and your ISP's control. ************************************* Maybe somebody should read history before writing client. Or the forum, for that matter. Or the other complaints.
