Since i had my 1st computer, 23 years ago, i always wanted an immersive VR device.
In thoses olds days, 48 KiloByte of memory was a lot, 20MB mass storage was insanly expensive, 1Mhz CPU was a fast one, the few computers able to render a few 3D polygons was named "Silicon Graphics"
Now we have quad gfx card embeding 512MB of memory each, memory bus with many Gb/s Bandwidth, Gigahertz multicore GPU, 24" 2ms LCD display rendering millions colors over 50Hz, Real-time lightning, A TeraByte fast mass-storage device is affordable (still not cheap, but affordable), etc ...
Hell ! good ! But where is my immersive (not a HUD) 3D VR Helmet ?
A Fast googling tell me i can find some, able to render 800x600 and more (can't play SL below that)... but... maybe it's old website ... it tell me 10.000USD and more... more more more !
WTF ? Nobody is interested in immersive VR ? Our Gfx card have *no problems* to handle stereoscopic rendering, it's featured in openGL since age and our recent gfx card are openGL compliant ! Even openGL 2.0 !!
Well... anyone have any information on descent and affordable (below 1000USD) immersive (not HUD) VR helmet ? (And i don't talk about glove, which is a lot more difficult)

Maybe i can set up two computers running SL and have the avies stuck together and in mouseview! Output the left view to the left LCD and the right to the other LOL!

Heh, I remember trying one of those VR Helmets @ a college tour. Was fun for a few minutes but then the headaches begin. When I took it off I was actually disoriented from the confusing feedback- brain says we're moving, feet say otherwise. The heck with the helmets tho, I want a Sensory Suit!!! Let ya feel everything that goes on!

Wasn't SL originally written to drive VR helmets?

I think theres health conserns about VR helmets. Televisions and computer monitors release radiation don't they? Imagine staring directly into it about 1 inch away from your face. It could do damage to your eyes. My mother used to tell me to back away from the TV when i was a kid hehe. Same thing about the sun... But i admit i would love a VR device too. ^.^

www.3dvisor.comIve been looking at this one for some time now... I really, really wants to try it. If I like it (if I really like it), it might be worth that $899 price tag.

Eww.. 800x600 at 60hz. I've gotten so used to anything over 80 that 60 will definitely give me headaches. Now if they could pull say.. 1024 at 75-80hz, i'd definitely check it out.
And here's 10 bucks saying that the hud would be broken on a stereo display like that.
