My husband can't use his eyes much for the next 3-6 months. I've heard of a lot of different voice programs people are using (TeamSpeak and Skype come to mind). Is there any one preferred by SLers more than the others?

Ventrilo seemed to work alright when I tried it, the installation was easy enough and the program worked right as soon as I set it up correctly.

Skype works fine, I haven't used it in connection with SL, though.

Does he have some people in mind to use whatever voice chat he decides to use, or will he be content speaking with whoever is using a voice system?

There is, unfortunately, no text to voice for SL chat, unfortunately.

pure personal choice. having not used a VOIP program before, id suggest you start with one like teamspeak or ventrilo

i have used both for a number of years. you cannot go wrong with either.

i know people swear by skype, while i have no personal experience with it, im sure its a fine choice as well

No, he doesn't have anyone in particular in mind to chat with. Mostly he's bummed to be cut off from the world of SL for what will likely be a few months, and I want to install a voice program so he can at least talk with some other people (besides just me) who share his interest in SL.

Thanks for the voice program suggestions. :)

The text to speech system that comes with Windows XP can be made to read the text within the mIRC client with no real problem, this can be a good way to stay in touch with the SL world by listening to the #secondlife IRC channel. This can be runing in the background while SL is running and presumably while a voice chat program is running also.

We (Indigo Crew) have rented a Ventrilo server that can have up to 20 concurrent users connected. Anyone is free to use it; just IM me in world for the connection information. I'll ever set you up private rooms if you want!

Pathfinder also has one set up for the educators group.

We at Club 69 Radio use TeamSpeak ourselves. We've tried to use Skype, but Skype seems to be a resourse hog like SL when it comes to bandwith because it causes us to buffer (what happens when you hear a chunk of a song repeat itself) when on air so we stuck to Teamspeak.

Um, I am a crew of one, so I guess I can't say the SLU Crew, but SLuniverse has a Teamspeak server available - you can find out details at http://www.sluniverse.com/voice/ .

How expensive/hard is it to install that on one server for private use?
