The preview grid has only one person in it now, me.
The inventory changes and other changes need to be tested. It's better that they get tested now than after they are put into effect on the main grid. The more people test them the more likely it is that problems will be found.
You don't need to fill out official tests to be of value in testing the code, just go and play and buy stuff and fiddle with your inventory and try to break it.

I think one important segment of the testing community is being segregated out of the preview. I'm speaking of the Linux client users. Yes give us preview and ALL OF US would go there and test it 24/7. You have no idea how many unused nerd power is just laying dormant. Give us a preview client and we will test, we will break it and we will point out what to be fixed. Nothing like dormant nerd power. SHAME!

I think a big problem is that most people are probably not aware that each update is available on the preview grid prior to release (if in fact that is the case). Previously, they have announced preview grid availability ahead of big releases, but rarely for point releases of the same version. More people would help test if the communication about preview availability was better. The announcement about 1.10.3 did not mention the preview at all.

I missed seeing an announcement of a preview for upgrade that broke the inventory system - the version currently running on the main grid. I pay fairly close attention to SL forums and announcements, and I had the impression there was no preview of the crippled inventory system we are currently running. There are a number of threads where people are describing and complaining about the current broken inventory system, some writing as if they were saying something new. The fix for some or all of the problems they are bringing up is already in the works available for much needing testing. At this point it would be better to spend one's time in the preview grid trying to make something work wrong than to document the current crippled version's infirmities. Same for the LOD problems, I suspect, and the others.

Exactly, and thanks Susanne for making announcements in General about Preview grids - this isn't the first time you've been the one to alert me to the fact that there's a new Preview Grid up. I'll be popping on there tonight.

Having a Linux preview will help immensely, and aid in debugging (as we can take our development tools to the crash dump and find out where it's crashing, and report it back to the Lindens). We did this with 1.10.1 Release when we couldn't log in, and raised a fuss to get the bug reports in properly.
Which reminds me. They're looking for Linux-dedicated developers to assist Icculus.

Benefits of a Linux Preview Client
06-12-2006 10:15
Currently there is no Preview client for the Linux operating system avaliable even though we are supported as an alpha client on main grid (which is actually fairly stable when there isn't a known issue).
I think that releasing the Linux build for Preview Grid would help both communities greatly. In general, users of Linux are eager to test and submit bug reports, I think you'd have a lot more people on Preview if it was avaliable to the Linux native client. Furthermore, the Linux build wouldn't ship broken at release as often as problems could be caught in preview long before the new release is rolled out onto main grid. This means better support for us and less confusion on release day in addition to additional testers on Preview. Overall a very positive move for LindenLabs and the Linux community on SecondLife.
Finally, releasing a build for preview would likely only require modifying a copy of the existing makefile for the Linux Alpha client for the main grid to use the preview grid's servers and resources. It shouldn't require much more work to compile for preview grid then it does to compile for main grid.

From: Moopf Murray Cristiano! Please stop impersonating Taco! It's messing with my bonce! PS. Seriously, that's twice today I'd thought Taco had replied to a thread *shakes fist* That is because, like I did previously with Chip Midnight, I have also killed Taco, and now will be posting as him. At least you didn't accidentally tell me to go fuck myself like Kendra did to Nyx Divine in the Second Citizen forums because of a mistaken avatar icon lol.
