Ye Gads, the more SL advances the farther it falls behind the times. As they add big shiny features like Firefox, Havok2, and Mules, they are also alpha-testing a contoversial but powerful new feature: Spline Reticulation!

Dear Ben, if land owners have access to the powerful, graceful spline reticulation options availabile in the 1.9(fic) preview, there will be no limit to the havok they could wreak... creatively of course.

So while we wait for the next point release, I'll be busy reticulating splines like there's no tomorrow! Can't...Get...Enough!!

It's a joke from Sim City 2000, which included "reticulating splines" as one of the loading messages. After that point, they put it in every Sims game whether it actually did it or not.

What I believe it originally meant was that the landscape in SimCity 2000 was made up of a grid of wavy lines defined by math formulae (ie, splines). You had a cursor (ie, a reticle) with which you could select bits of land, so in order to show the cursor, the game had to work out the locations of the four corners of the cursor on the splines and join them together. In order to be able to do this fast enough to catch up with the mouse movement, it had to calculate all the coordinates in advance, ie, reticulate the splines.

They claim a similar process was used for random factors on the other sims games but I think they just put it in there as a joke because it sounds so strange ;) (Even some versions SimCity 2000 had a female voice crooning "Reticulating Splines.." as it loaded)

If this means that SL is getting a clearer land selection cursor with actual borders as well as the height dots that sounds like a great addition ;)

So we aren't getting advanced spline reticulation?
I was really hoping we would, the basic spline reticulation we have just doesn't cut it. Why just the other day when i was reticulating splines by hand i was cursing how basic SL's spline reticulation was, and saying to everyone around how we needed advanced spline reticulation. Of course for LL to add advanced spline reticulation would require them first to fully grok the true nature of spline reticuation and how it effects the diverse userbase. One of the techincal drawbacks of implenting advanced spline reticulation, would be the galring need for inverse advanced spline reticulation; which is infinitely more complex, not to mention there being more then one method for implementing inverse advance spline reticulation. The biggest drawback of inverse advanced spline reticulation is that sometimes a flayrod can go out of skew on treddle; If LL is to take this path they will need extra strong bults on thier doors to keep the spanish inquisition out.

..That was one of the more amusing things I noticed in SimCopter. that, and the rendering of the Sims themselves. They were pretty hilarious unintentionally. I originally thought it referred to helicopter mechanics somehow. >.>;
