With all these recent crashes causing damage to Second Life's grid and various servers, and the constant updates and raising file sizes putting pressure on the servers, could it be possible that Second Life could have a fatal crash? To shut it down for good?

I've actually had nightmares about this. The losses that *have* happened due to the wonky asset server don't exactly inspire much confidence; it's easy to fear the worst.
I hate thinking about it. x_x

I hate thinking about it. x_x It's true, a good reason that this could happen to Second Life, but then again if you think about it, they can get as big of servers as they want and give as many prims as they want, but this costs money. They pay yearly or monthly for those servers, and if they can't afford to keep them up, well, let's not talk about what would happen then. However, if more people played, and more people paid for the game, Linden Labs would have more money, which means they could buy more servers, which means we'd have more land, and with more server space means more prim usage, and with more prim usage we're completley fine, and also with more money they'd have less crashes and less of the chance of them getting shut down for good due to a fatal crash.

Money is hardly an issue. LL has more corporate backing than the Bush administration. A fatal crash or comparable problem, on the other hand, is an all too likely scenario. I just hope they have backups stretching back far enough to restore things if that ever happened (bearing in mind that an issue may lie dormant and be present on all recent backups).

heh, I think over half the players in sl would continue playing if they suddenly all lost everything they owned. Anyway, I think it highly unlikely that a crash in SL will cause anyone to die...

Backups and redundant hardware like all business. Load based problems would be more realistic than some kind of major system error.

i can't remember where i read this, but it came from a linden - asset dbs are backed up -every hour.- so hopefully that's a little bit of mind-easing...
"if i had a tumor, i'd name it marla."
(pretty dark humor just after having the 'relay for life' in sl, but if fightclub isn't some of the funniest dark humor britain for once -didn't- produce...

From 06-06-2006 01:56PM: From: Pol Tabla I've heard that the CEO of the company that makes Jenga thinks Second Life is an unstable platform.
