First, let me say I'd be upset too. Your story sounds pretty painful.
It sounds highly unlikely though that what you're experiencing has anything to do with the updates. Unless I grossly misunderstand how the system works, there's no reason to believe a grid/client update would change the data on the login server for your password, at least not without affecting more people than just you, in which case there would have been no way this forum wouldn't have lit up like a christmas tree with people bitching after their passwords had been restored. Since that didn't happen, I have to believe the problem was on your end, although I'm sure that's not what anything you want to hear. Does anyone besides you hace access to your computer? Are you 100% sure, and I mean 100%, absotively posilutely, no margin for error, completely certain, willing to bet your mother's life on it, sure that your machine is completely free of trojans, spyware, keyloggers, etc? Is your internet securitysoftware up to date and fully functional? It really sounds to me like someone is messing with you. First they got ahold of your login info, went into your account, spent a little money, and changed your password on you. Then after you got your old password restored (which, I'm not quite sure how exactly you were able to do) they waited a little while before logging into your account again to delete all your items. The timing of all this to coincide with 2 different updates does seem a little odd, I'll admit, but that could be part of the prank, or maybe just a real coincidence. Either way, a deliberate hack seems a lot more likely than any theory that you were twice struck by some mysterious phantom of the update that haunts you and only you. If I'm wrong and no one actually broke into your account to delete your stuff, it might still be there. Have you tried the standard fix-all's like clearing your cache, uninstalling & reinstalling SL, and all that good stuff? _____________________

Presumably you've checked all the usual things like spyware, keyloggers etc, and have an antivirus program running as well as regular checks like Spybot and Ad-Aware?

Have you checked your account history, both in-world and the online version, to see if you can tell where the lindenbucks went?

James this is terrible news. Do check your account history as SuezanneC suggested and also you might ask LL if your account has been logged from odd IPs other than the one(s) you normally use.

Good Advice
01-13-2006 15:28
about the IP address. Hijacking accounts should be a criminal matter that is pursued by the Lindens. I had someone hack my account before. I still don't know how they did it, but they did. Fortunately, I was online at the time and saw the person accessing my account (which I had not given the password for to ANYONE and it contained both numerals and letters, so I still don't know how the person did it unless they somehow accessed privileged information). In any case, I immediately contacted a linden after I logged on with an ALT account and then reset the password through the main page (the hacker(s) had not yet managed to switch the email for the account, thank heavens.)
Interestingly, at the time, a well-known griefer group knew of two of my accounts and it was both of those accounts that had the password altered. None of my other accounts were touched. Another interesting fact: grid attacks tend to happen just prior to or just after updates. I imagine that the tactic here is to lay blame on the company rather than the perpetrant. Of course, this is ridiculous logic. It is like saying, "look I know it is illegal to murder, but because you are the government and you didn't stop me from murdering, and it is legal to buy weapons, it is your fault and not mine that I murdered someone." _____________________

I dont know what good this would do you now but one way to get around most keyloggers is to use the on-screen keyboard when entering your passwords.
It isn't perfect but it is an extra security step. I ALWAYS use this in a college campus if I must enter a password. That gets past any hardware keyloger types such as the usb keylogers. (like the type that look like old ps2 keyboards input jack even.) and most of the software types. A few software versions may have the ability to sense the on-screen keyboard still but its not as likly. Especilly if you got a few virus/spyware scanners going. For the extreamly paranoid, and tech heads, you could do a simple program in VB or C++ to input your password for you. One that bypasses the keyboard commands all together and uses hex. Of course then you have to watch out for the hex logers ![]() And that is only for your end. I'm betting the grid attacks are attempts or distractions while others get personal data from the system without them realizing because of all the human resources directed toward the major grid attack. While data is gathered on the other side. But I dunno about that. Could be just kids. _____________________
