SL Live Music Historical Museum?

Hello there!

As you may have noticed, Live Music in SecondLife has expanded a great deal in the last year or so. Rosa Gardner and I are thinking of documenting it by starting up a SecondLife Live Music Historical Museum. I know live music in SL has changed our lives considerably, and I imagine it has touched many others as well.

Anyway, we thought it would be good to post a thread about it, to see what people's opinions are on the subject.

Specifically, we are wondering about:

* What sort of items would be good to have on display? (i.e. pictures, audio clips, video, notecards)

* What kind of legal concerns would be involved? (Getting permission from the musician would be a priority, but anything other than that..?)

* Any ideas for shape or design? We currently have a riverfront property of about 1450 sq m (approx 36 x 40 m) and about 550 prims available. However, this could be shaped almost any way depending on build shape (or increased in size).

* Would you be interested in helping on such a project? (mainly with building, scripting, data gathering, etc)

* Any other thoughts?

Thanks in advance, let us know what you think!

One of the first original musical compositions I remember encountering in SL dates back to fall 2003; Ezhar Fairlight displayed a game he made called Senso at Lindenworld (a resident-run "amusement park";), and the game played a song composed and recorded by Lordfly Digeridoo. (In fact, I played Senso so much that I used to hear that damn song in my head all the time... :) )

Anyway, this could be a neat way to document musical contributions to SL, Jaycatt.

Jaycatt,

What a lovely idea. I'd like to put myself at your disposition to help in this endeavour. I mostly script, but I've been known to be involved in a few fairly large building projects with the rest of my crew. You know how to reach me in-world.

Jaycatt, what a wonderful idea! One thing you might want to consider is interviewing various live musicians with questions ranging from choice in equipment to musical influences, etc. It might also be fun to create giant wall mural featuring a historical timeline showing when important performers began playing and when certain key events occured. Please let me know if there is any way that I can help!

Depending on when, I'd definitely be willing to contribute building services.

Thanks Beryl, Ralek, Persephone, and Fade!

You raise an interesting point too, Beryl, about other forms of creative music expression over the years in SL. I had been thinking of the scope of live streamed music, but it's not a bad idea to consider other forms too (such as the Hyper line of instruments by Robbie). I'm a bit worried it might make the scope of the project too large to include the non-streamed live music, but you never know... Or perhaps that could be "phase two" to add that portion in.

I appreciate the offer Ralek and Fade, thank you so much! I'm not sure exactly what scripting would be involved, but there always seems to be some no matter what the build.

As for the build itself, it's mostly ideas at this point but Rosa and I would love to show you both the plot and perhaps discuss what type of structure would fit best. Anyway, those are more getting into the details, but we're getting closer to that point all the time...

Thanks too Persephone :) I was also thinking of some kind of timeline, I'm just not sure how to figure out where everything should be placed! Plus, there's been such a wonderful explosion of live music in just the last few months it might be tricky to capture it all. But I'm willing to try for sure...

Some type of questionaire would be fun too... Nothing that goes too much into RL, but more into influences, SL experiences, and the like.

We have a museum at Phobos, if you would like to setup some sort of mutual linkage or other cooperative effort, and also the history wiki of course. Feel free to use it:

I'd be happy to provide any pieces of the old "Virtual Garage" build that I put together for the MacJams group - and really anything else. You might also think of tracing some of the groups - seems to me there have been a couple "communities" coming in about the same time that brought several in with them - I founded the MacJammers group and brought in several folks who populated the site MacJams.com including the inimitable Slim Warrior, who's been absolutely tireless (and fearless) in promoting live music in SL - diving into land ownership before most of the rest of our group anyway.

Anywhoooo, I'd like to help as much as I can (though I'll be out of town and have spotty SL access for several days).

Jaycatt, please let me know if you would like any help with the timeline. I have a ton of photoshop and design experience and would love to help in any way possible.

Wonderful, Persephone :) Thank you! I will probably try and glean what I can from the forums/blogs first, gathering all the data, so it might be a while. But I will keep you in mind, and I really appreciate your help!

Thanks Kaklick :D Part of what we're thinking about is also documenting Live Music venues (past and present). Although there might not be enough physical space to actually put part of the venue on display (wouldn't *that* be neat) we'd at least like to do snapshots of them... I'll contact ya when we get to that stage. I definately would want to include the Garage, I remember a few shows there myself :)

Thanks Eggy! We do have a spot in mind (riverfront) which should be very nice, but I will take a look at your Phobos museum too, in the near future. Hopefully the plot we are thinking of is not too small... Should be all right, but you never know once things get started. ;)
