Voip?...

Thanks for posting this Claude, you and Sudane do a pile of work to keep the gov't running. I realize you want the whole RA proceedings in SL itself as a general principle, but given that there is a 7 day email vote, why not use VOIP as an option? BTW I like the idea of standardizing on gmail using first.last@gmail.com for avatar names.

Chat can be slow, free VOIP via Teamspeak, Skype or other application with chat as backup might get more discussion in. There would need to be a way to record the conference for transcription. Just a thought. The clerk/fastest VOIP typist could try to type out in real time what's being said for those with chat only.

I don't have a microphone, for one. :p

Even if all the members had skype and we could get a five way conference going, how would citizens and observers "listen"?

Don't need a mic...

You don't need a mic to listen. Any RA member without a mic could listen and just type when saying something...BTW a mic/headphone combo is less than $20USD at radioshack. I'll look into the recording options. Without recording, there's no way to make a transcript. Nothing stops all 28 citizens from listening in.

The point is, it adds an undue burden on people, some of which are on connections that barely run SL as it is. Also - and a better reason - the nature of our discussions make the asynchronous discussion chat provides the better tool, in my opinion.

It is just MY opinion, though, so please, don't feel as if I'm soundly rejecting you. It's just, over time, the average RA meeting more resembles a Thinker's group chat with several lines of discussion going on at once, and that is something voice chat is poorly suited for (as opposed to straight-up one-on-one or one-to-many talking, where voice works better).

Also, my first inclination is always the smartass quip. It's a moral weakness. :)

I understand...

Those are excellent points Aliasi. I just thought I'd mention it. BTW the context here is "in addition to", not "instead of". :) The technology might make better sense for a 1 on 1 conversation. An alternative I've seen is to have some of the debate offline via teamspeak and then use the RA session to vote and report out. I've seen this in county commissions and I don't particularly like the lack of transparency, but it might be doable if the recording is available.

BTW thanks for the wonderful Chinese temple. I have the best looking plot in Shermerville now. :)
