What is this?
-------------------------------------------------------------
I'm Pathfinder Linden, an employee at Linden Lab. Nice to meet you!
One of my goals is to help new Residents find things that are interesting and fun, so each week I will be distributing a summary of *10* cool new things to explore in Second Life. I will be posting a new notecard in this station every week, so be sure to check back !
These "picks" are simply things that I have found in Second Life that I think new Residents would have fun exploring. But I will be as objective as possible in choosing them. I encourage all Residents to contact me for ideas about experiences that new Residents would enjoy. I will cover a wide range of experiences, and will focus on things that new Residents can quickly get involved with on their own.
If you know about an experience in Second Life that you think new Residents would have fun with, please email me at pathfinder@lindenlab.com and I will check it out.
If you are new to Second Life, WELCOME!
This world is full of amazing places and people, and I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time exploring it all. Please take a look at the following places I've found. I think you'll have fun with them.

********* SPECIAL FEATURE: Information about Volunteer Programs in Second Life
Second Life Volunteer Programs
There are several Second Life Volunteer Groups whose members would be happy to help you along your way, in particular the Second Life Mentors, Live Helpers, Instructors, and Greeters.
Second Life Greeters - the SL Greeter program brings volunteer Second Lifers together with brand new Residents. Currently you are only able to select a Greeter during your initial sign-up and they provide a one-time welcoming experience into Second Life.
Second Life Mentors - the Mentor group consists of volunteer Residents who devote part of their time in-world to helping new people. Meeting, greeting and answering questions is their specialty. You can often find Mentors in the Welcome Area - the place where you first arrived on the Main Land - which is located where the sims Bonifacio, Morris, Ahern and Dore meet.
Live Help - Live Helpers can be contacted by selecting 'Help' and then Live Help' from the menu at the top of your screen. Live Helpers are a group of Linden staffers and established Residents who make themselves available to the Second Life community at large to answer questions, mediate disputes, or simply provide moral support. There is also a Help Pavilion in the Welcome Area at Bonifacio (238, 237) where you can find more information.
Instructors - the Instructor group is full of teachers, instructors and other Residents who like to share a wealth of Second Life information. Classes are held in various places in-world and can be located by going to the "Find" menu and selecting "Events" and then "Class" from the category menu.
If you would like to apply to be a Second Life volunteer, read more here:

If you have any questions, please contact Jeska Linden in-world or send an email jeska@lindenlab.com.

Now...on to the Picks!
1) EXPLORE A GIANT TREE AND SKY-HIGH TREEHOUSES
Luskwood is a place in Second Life full of giant trees, treehouses, rope bridges, and soaring platforms all created with nature in mind. Many Residents dress up as all kinds of woodland creatures there, so you just might find yourself talking to a fox or squirrel! The giant main tree is hollow, so be sure to fly all the way to the bottom of the trunk to find the entrance. Climb up the spiral staircase and eventually you'll find yourself in the treetops with a sky-high view of the surrounding forest.

2) CHECK OUT DETAILED MODELS OF CLASSIC CARS IN A 1950'S STYLE TOWN SQUARE
If you like classic cars and the 50's, then "The Good Old Days" is for you! This area is modelled after a 1950's style town square, complete with gas station, barber shop, diner, and a movie theater (currently playing "Ben Hur"
. The cars here are too complex in terms of prims to be drivable, but they are great examples of how you can create amazingly realistic models in Second Life. Put on your leather jacket or poodle skirt and wander around. Be sure to check out all the vintage signs and posters on the walls, but be careful about the invading giant robots. They look like escapees from some 1950's science fiction thriller!

3) EXPLORE STRANGE LANDS, GAIN SKILLS, AND FIGHT MONSTERS IN A ROLEPLAYING GAME
DarkLife is a roleplaying game like Diablo or EverQuest, built right into the world of Second Life. Players buy a backpack which holds the game code and then using weapons, armor, potions and magic they fight monsters, form teams and level up. Be sure to click on the "Tomes of Knowledge" when you arrive to learn the rules. There's a town, cemetary, and creepy woodland areas filled with critters and secrets. I cannot share many pictures of this place (that would give away the secrets!), but if it's RPG adventure you seek, then you've come to the right place.

4) VIEW AMAZING ARTWORK BY RESIDENTS ALONG A BEAUTIFUL RIVER
RiverWalk is an incredible collaboration between a number of Residents interested in preserving and displaying Resident-created artwork as well as unique architecture. Be sure to visit the RiverWalk Information center (right at the landmark) and grab a copy of the "RiverWalk Guide" to learn the history of the area and all the Residents involved in its creation. Wander around the gardens, sculptures, and paintings, all surrounded by natural beauty. Stick around for sunset, as there are Fireworks every night! (5 minutes after Sunset) Swan Boats are also under development to give you a gentle tour along the river.

5) TAKE A STEAMBOAT TOUR
There's a fully-functional steamboat in Taber that will take you through twisty waterways running around a beautiful Tudor Village. It is always running, and stops briefly at a couple places to pick up passengers. The landmark above is one of the stops, so just sit patiently on the comfy bench while you wait for it to arrive. You'll also pass beneath bridges that automatically open to allow the steamboat passage. I hear there are some sharks lurking in the area, so dangle your feet in the water at your own risk! Try going into Mouselook Mode (hit the letter M to enter) for a firsthand perspective of the peaceful countryside and quaint buildings along the water's edge.

6) RIDE A TRAIN ACROSS THE NORTHERN CONTINENT
The Northern Continent of Second Life is a vast and mostly undeveloped countryside. Telehubs are few and far between, so a great way to explore this area is to hitch a ride on the Second Life Rail Road (SLRR)! The SLRR currently makes three stops for passengers, where it will wait for a couple minutes before ringing a bell and heading along on its perpetual route. Kick back and enjoy the sights while chatting with fellow passengers. Note: the current train stops are unadorned at the moment, but detailed Train Stations are being planned!

7) EXPLORE A HOBO VILLAGE ALONG THE SECOND LIFE RAIL ROAD
If you are riding the SLRR, you might notice this cool Hobo Village set up right along the railway in Calleta. Check out the huge bonfire and rickety old bridge, and be sure to climb the water tower for a birds-eye view (just watch out for the crows..they are everywhere!). There's even a "Hobo Band" that has performances in the space. Sit around the makeshift stove and have a cup of stew while sharing stories of life on the Iron Road.

VISIT AN OLD-WORLD EUROPEAN CITY
Neualtenburg is a collaborative project to build a large Old-World European city, and it's a perfect example of a themed-area in Second Life created by a group of dedicated Residents. Wandering around the streets and town squares, you'll swear you've been sent back in time! The Church is full of wonderful stained glass windows and a large pipe organ. See if you can fly up and sit on the bell tower! Be sure to click on one of the many maps around the city, as they will show you a detailed layout of the whole space with additional landmarks to help you find your way.

9) DISCOVER A SECRET WORLD MADE JUST FOR TINY AVATARS
This place is in Neualtenburg, directly beneath the city! Look for the "Secret Tinies City" sign and you'll see a hole in the ground. Go ahead and jump in, and you'll fall onto a comfy pillow below. This Secret City is sized just for "tinies" (very very small avatars), and it's full of mini-homes and even a marketplace catering to tinies. See if you can find the mini-sized hottub and take a dip. Just remember, unless you are TINY sized, you probably will have trouble fitting inside the doors of all these buildings!

10) TAKE A WALK ON THE "TINY SIZED" SIDE OF SECOND LIFE
A recent craze really taking off in Second Life is the design of super-small avatars, commonly called "tinies" or "little critters." These incredible avatars come in a variety of animal shapes (little squirrels, gnomes, kitties, rabbits, and even frogs!). The ExtroVirtual Group Store has an amazing selection for all your tiny needs. Tiny avatars, tiny furniture, tiny homes, tiny clothes...well, you get the picture. Be sure to click on the "TP Up to Fun Tubes" beachball at the entrance to explore a Habitrail-in-the-Sky!
There are MANY Residents in Second Life starting to make tiny-sized items and avatars, so be sure to click FIND and then under PLACES just search for "tiny" or "tinies." You'll find a ton of 'em!
