I know i`m thinking ahead, but what will our next sim be? Well, I have a few ideas :)

Theme: Roman Republic/City of Rome

Why: Rome was the intellectual capitol of the world, One of the first Democracies, a cultural/influential city, there is no Roman Sim in SL (that I know of), and Rome is very beuatiful and historic.

Theme: Ancient Greece/Islands of Santorini

Why: World First Decmocracy, unique architechture, no Greek Sim in SL, intellectual, and very scenic.

Why Santorini: Very Scenic, is said to be location of Atlantis (Ideal Society/Government), Unique Architecture, and it is a cultural city.

Any other ideas?

Well, there *is* a somewhat-Roman/Greek sim in the guise of Athena (and there's an Atlantis sim, too!) but your points are still entirely valid. And, for what it's worth, I like both a lot; a *properly done* Roman sim, especially...

On other ideas:

One I'd like to see that I'm pretty sure hasn't been done before is an entirely-aerial sim. That is, a sim whose ground is underwater (since we can't make it go completely...) if only shallowly, with the provision that all builds have to be built "up high".

This is less any high-falutin' cultural reasons and more a "a *proper* flying island has never really been done in SL, and I liked Skies of Arcadia" thing, though. :) In order to account for the extra prims used, perhaps the "airspace road" around each island could be divvied up like the prim reserve in Neualtenburg now, with some pre-made islands/structures.

On a similar note, an entirely/mostly underwater sim, although there is that Atlantis sim doing that already.

hm... use some prims for a ceiling and make an "underground" sim...

Yes, these are all far-out ideas, and I'm not necessarily suggesting 'em all seriously... but it would be neat to encourage kinds of places not seen often in Second Life, as opposed to the "random cultural/ethnic/subculture" theme that other private sims use.

It's strange, when I first joined Second Life, I always thought there would be a few "obvious" themes around...

- a cyberpunk city. Yes, there is Nexus Prime covering Gibson/Bonifacio, but it's simply a "very nice build". Almost nobody goes ever there. In a whole year, there was just one event there I attended (a beta-test for Portal Wars), and that's just because I suggested the idea of doing the beta-test there ;) Most people never saw the city - and it's just outside the Welcome Area!

- a medieval city. Well, there was none available when I logged in last year :) Now we have Neualtenburg :)

- fantastic-medieval cities, mostly for roleplaying - these are fairly well represented, although, to be honest, they aren't too much appealing...

- a Japanese medieval city. Tons of attempts have been made, there are even "Japanese sims" done by the Lindens, and later by Anshe Chung. None are a "city" like Neualtenburg.

- an Ancient Egyptian city - of course, giving place to a Stargate-style "conspiracy theory". Watch the slaves build the pyramids while UFOs cruise the skies :) Yes, there are a few scattered Egyptian-style buildings around, even somebody who started doing that on a sim-scale in a private island, but I guess it's sadly not around anymore

- a jungle "lost city". Yes, we have Numbakulla :) Yay for that :)

- Disneyland. Hmm. Ok, I *was* expecting it!! Things like Spitoonie come into that area, and so did the SL Theme Park (which doesn't exist anymore, I think)

- an English Victorian city. Sadly, Olde London, part of the Neverland project, was dismantled. It even had this interesting ideas of getting clues to roam across the city in search of the next clue. I must say I liked Neverland overall, but Olde London held my heart :)

- an 18th century themed city. Well, you know - the puritans in the 19th century were prudes ;) The 18th century was much more fun and definitely more fitting for a "mature sim". You know, wild orgies in palaces; the Hell-Fire Club; listening to lovely baroque music while frolicking around; and, of course, the utterly wonderful dresses, complete with wigs, of the period. Also, the century of lights and reason; says a lot to the Americans (of course), but also to my own country, Portugal, as the capital, Lisbon, was rebuilt in the 18th century after an earthquake, and has a "modern" city layout planned in 1755. Unlike most European capitals, who have medieval nucleii and are mostly late 19th-century builds (with scattered older monuments here and there), Lisbon's downtown was created as a planned, modern "Imperial Capital" (well, we had an empire back then...) in the 18th century. I actually still have a plan to recreate parts of it over the summer - projects, projects, projects, and not enough time (or L$!) to do them ;)

- and finally, last but not least, Imperial Rome (or at least the latter days of the Republic). That is something I can't understand why it was never been done! It's an almost perfect setting for a political/mature sim - treason at the Senate followed by orgies during the night, planned cities, organization, all sorts of events - theater, chariot races, gladiator arenas. I mean, it begs to be recreated in SL :)

I have to see that "Athena" sim... now I'm curious!

An underground sim would be VERY interesting... I would definately live there. The only problem I can think of with that, though, is that lighting in secondlife isn't really good enough to give the illusion of being underground... (is it..?) But it would still be very cool :D

While there are thousands of possibilities and it *is* early on, I would be very much in favour fo a Santorini Sim.

There is a Greeek Sim already but Santorini, in the sense of the *pre-Greek*, pre-explosion, culture would be fantastic and IMO unique. i.e- Santorini but with the mountain still there.

The last I read on it, evidence pointed towards a Minoan flavoured yet Matriarchal paradise that influenced the development of the entire area and was the starting point for many diff cultures. Sounds perfect to me.

:)

I think the operative word in all of these ideas (and they are all great ideas :)), is the word "city" and perhaps that is a part of the reason why they are never built.

It's easy to do a build that looks like a city, the hard part is making a real functioning city that folks live in and that grows like a real city does. To me this is one of the immediate challenges facing Neualtenburg itself.

The Japanese sim you mention is a good example in that it is Japanese themed, but without some kind of government or a social organisation of some kind, that sim - like most others - will forever be a loose collection of similar builds as opposed to a city.

This is the reason why Neualtenburg may be the first sucessfull sim of that type, and why it's up to us to lead the way to other themed "city" sims!

:)

The reduced lighting under the water would help; just have the sim ground be low under the water, with the "cave roof" being built so you can't actually go outside of the water.

I was hoping that if we added another sim, we would add a Bauhaus-themed extension to Neualtenburg. I would hope for something based off of post-war Vienna in The Third Man, with a small carnival area, similar to the Prater amusement park, with a huge Riesenrad, and large drainage network underneath.

However, I would be open to the idea of a Roman sim. I'd love to have gladiator games.

This would be really cool as well. :)

For some strange reason I have always thought that some of Gropius' buildings especially, would fit right in to Neualtenburg. Even though they look nothign like the fatchwerk houses.
