Yes. Name one piece what you wish the chair to be called - this will become your "Parent Prim". Next select ALL the prims one by one, selecting the Parent Prim (the one you named) last. Next hit Control+L, and they will be linked together - OR - you can just go to the Tools menu and select TAKE and it will pick up all the parts as one coalesced object without linking them.
Linking the prims causes them to stay together whenever they are moved as if they were one solid piece.

You can also...

right click and drag a yellow box around all your items. Once they are highlighted, press the same Control+L and this links them all together.

If you use this method, it's wise to check the "Select My Objects Only" option in the Tools menu first, and to be sure that you aren't accidentally highlighting other objects when you drag the selection box around the ones you intend to link. It's a nice quick method, but if you aren't careful it can be a frustrating way to link things. I find it easiest sometimes to move my camera so I'm looking straight down on the things I'm linking.

Oh yes, thanks for that! It is a pain to try and figure out why something won't link and you get the "Do not have permission" error pop up.

It is not possible to unlink certain parts. You can Edit Linked Parts by selecting the check box in the build window. You can also unlink all parts with Ctrl-Shift-L while in Edit mode. When you do that, all the parts will still be selected. Hold down your shift key and click on the parts you want unlinked. After clicking on each part you want unlinked, press Ctrl-L again to relink the remaining parts.

Yes, you can unlink certain parts. I do it all the time. Just last night, in fact, I unlinked and removed the waistbands from half a dozen skirts. All you have to do is Edit Linked Parts, select the prim you want to unlink, and then use Unlink on the Tools menu. Works like a dream.

Linking objects with moving parts
05-02-2009 22:08
I've made a cabinet with two doors that open on click. I have each door linked to its hinge, and they open and close fine; my problem is, how do I link the whole cabinet together and still have the doors work? I know it can be done because I've purchased furniture that works that way, but I can't figure out how to make it work, or what order to select the prims in before linking. Can anyone help me? Thank you!

Should make sure the doors aren't the things that are clicked last. The root prim is the last thing you click when selecting the prims, so make sure it's the largest, straightest prim of the lot.
Might have to re-rez the cabinet when you're done to reset the scripts to the rotation of the root prim.

Thank you -- I wanted to give it away and/or sell it, so need to figure out a way to do that so when someone wants to move it, it won't fall apart on them. Thank you!
