why did linking prims force them to have the same phantom settings?
whenever i linked a set of prims (both phantom and not) and stuck it in my inventory, the prims that were phantom weren't anymore when i re-rezed the lot.

Yes, I've had similar problems. Either the whole linked object becomes phantom, or it all becomes solid. I thought it was a "feature" not a bug. Luna

It's neither a feature, nor a bug, but a limitation of Havok. Or something like that.

I seem to recall something mentioned at a town hall about allowing phantom and solid prims to link together in the future. I think Mol is right that the explanation was that current situation is a limitation with Havok. The physics engine doesn't understand what to do with objects that are only partly tangible. I don't remember exactly what was said, as this was quite a while ago, but I know that they are working on it.

The rule of thumb is this (after testing this myself)
If you have 3 prims, and 2 are solid and one is phantom, the whole lot becomes solid when linked.
If you have 3 prims, and 2 are phantom and one is solid, the whole lot becomes phantom when linked.
So it's a rule of *the majority of solid or phantom types wins*. Havent tried it with an equal amount (as in 2 phantom and 2 solids) yet (duh) but would think that the the type of the first prim selected would win the majority vote on that when linking.

I was just going to post on this subject, did a quick search first, and found this old thread that beat me to it. I take it that there's no workaround for this at all, even from those of you who manage to achieve miracles with your builds...?
I basically have the old problem of a hanging cage that needs to have phantom bars but solid floor and ceiling. It's going to be sold in my shop, so needs to be linked as a single object.
Thanks.

The way I found around this when making my water features is to... 1)link the prims to be solid, and then link seperately the prims to be phantom, 2)select both linked sets as if to link them together BUT instead right clicking and selecting take copy. (this takes an unlinked but complete object into your inventory). Hope that helps
