It seems we're always reading requests for funding. Why not create a player-run committee that funds projects? The Lindens could budget a regular amount that the committee spends on what it sees as the projects with the most potential to bring the most fun to SL. We could call this organization the Second Way.

i'd like to propose a different name for the committee: rampant uncontrollable favoritism.

feeling cynical today. :D

I tried that. What I did was set up a donation box that took in donations and then a submission box for people to apply for funding. I then took the applications, deleted the names of who submitted them (sans favoritism) and then recruited a committee to go over and pick a winner.

The first two times went well but then donations sagged and applicants stopped applying complaining it was "too hard". On an application, all I asked was for what they were working on, who they were, how much they needed and why they thought they should "win" funding.

"Too hard" tells me people want funding but they dont want any questions asked as to why. They just want a hand out.

Made me kinda sad really. It was a project that I liked doing. I earned nothing off it as 100% of donations were returned to the community including the full $1k Linden funds for hosting an event around it.

If someone else wanted to take it up, thats how I did it. The donation box had a running tally of donations so all $ was out in the open.

Well MJ here's the thing. A lot of people have a lot of money and are willing to part with it very easily. I gave over 20k to americana back when they were alive, not counting all the money I spent claiming land and paying for the tax on it. I've given nearly 10k to christopher omega just for being a cool guy who has helped me immensely throughout the time I've spent in SL. I've given lots of money to a lot of people simply because I dont think I need it. I can easily make just about everything that other people sell for exorbitant amounts and I am willing to give it away for free, no questions asked. So I dont have anywhere to spend my money.
When I came to you I was a noob with 9k and all I needed was $1000 so I could afford the 10k plot for the disco. Considering that at the time I was making around $3500 per week it didnt seem like much, and since I needed it that very day... :)
Lets just say that commitees are inneficient. If you have a big project, ask your friends to help you out or throw a few fund raising events.

Eggy some ppl wanted to give without being known, thats why they tried my idea. Others wanted to give but didnt know to who. I didnt fund it, I only administered it. I'm just giving Oedefe an idea of what was already attempted and what happened.

I think it's a great idea!

I think it's a great idea. The Bhodi Tree Artists Collective already does this with grants to artists - Sapphire Bombay and Artemis Fate were our first grant recipients. (Stop by the gallery and see the great work they did!)

If you do organize a larger, more general funding source run by players, please let me know. I'd be happy to have the BTAC vote on becoming "A Second Way Agency" in the way that agencies become "United Way Agencies".
