How do you know which type to use?

Every sculptie can be derived from a simple plane by bending the parts of the plane
until your shape is created. Now for a simple plane you can

- "stitch" the left side to the right side by bending the plane until both sides lay besides each other. This is typically a cylinder shape with open ends.

- take the cylinder from above and close the caps. This is typically a spherical shape.

- take the cylinder and bend it along the other axis, so that its top and bottom lay besides each other. This is the typical form of a torus like shape.

- not stitch at all thus keeping a plane shape

So you have these 4 types of stitching:

- cylinder, if only the sides are stitched together
- sphere, if the sides are stitched and top and bottom are closed (poles)
- torus, if the sides AND top/bottom are stitched
- plane, if no stitching applies at all.

does that answer your question ?

Use the same type as your source model. Here's how they all work:

Spherical stitching stitches the left and right edges together, and collapses the top and bottom edges to poles. This is the default for all sculpties.

Cylindrical stitching stitches the left and right edges together, and leaves the top and bottom edges unstitched.

Toroidal stitching stitches the left and right esges together, and also stitches the top and bottom edges together.

Planar stitching leaves all edges unstitched.
