Simple Question on Root Prim

There must be a simplier way to do it but I'm at a loss. Is there any tip or suggestion as to maintaining a prim as the root prim? I understand the theory and how the prim is assigned but during the course of a build I always seem to forget and the next thing I know the root prim is some 0.001,0.001,0.001 nail buried at the the bottom of the build.

I wish that there was an assign root prim flag on the prim but I think I ask for too much. How do others deal with this or is it just me?

Well, I wouldn't figure it's too much of a hindrance to unlink (Ctrl-Shift-L) the object, deselect the intended root prim (Shift-click), reselect it (Shift-click again), and link (Ctrl-L).

The root prim is always the last one selected before linking. If you inadvertently select the wrong one last, simply do what Al said. Unlink, de-select the one you want to be the root, re-select it, and then re-link.

So you know, it's extremely common in 3D modeling that the last selected object will become the parent for groupings and hierarchies. Keeping track of your selection order is a crucial habit to develop. It's not just an SL thing. It's a 3D-in-general thing.

My tips for root prims...

Link sections of your build as you build:
--Select all prims in the build section.
--Visually choose a prim you want for your root prim.
--Shift-click the prim you want to be the root twice to unselect it and reselect it, therefore making it the root prim.
--CTRL-L to link the section together.

Choose prims on the front side as your root prims since the front is what you'll be looking at the most.

If your build is symmetrical, choose prims in different linksets that match so that you can adjust the position and have them match up using the same position numbers for x, y or z.
