Well, I think that you can put objects high up, but they all seem to fall down to around 500 meters. I might be wrong, but I'm sure that Hank Ramos and the USL Mega Tower builders know lots about that :)

usually if you tell something to be on a z axis of say 82497639, it wil default to 768metres.

I would guess this is the maximum Z heigh that can be reached, without having to go up and start manually moving stuff around.

The normal build tools will work up to 768. Above this, any attempt to move an object with edit will force it down to 768.

You can put things from 768 to 4096, but you can't edit them with the build tools (or they pop down to 768). You'll need a script with something like llMoveToTarget or another means to get them there. llMoveToTarget won't move more than 64m at a time, so it has to be called more than once. llSetPos only works to 768 or maybe 500 (I haven't tried it). I've read mixed reports about the permanence of objects in this range. But they hang around for a while. Further questions about doing this with scripts should go to the scripting forum.

Above 4096, if it isn't attached, it just disappears instantly and silently.

At least this is my experience.

Shouldn't we sticky something about this and related topics like max prim size?

Shack is 100% right, 4096 is the ultimate limit, you can reach this altitude with some script (nothing complex)
