I couldn't find any material on just how the joints work in SL. Can anyone provide a basic overview and how to?

For all intended purposes joints are broken and don't work the way they should.

Right now joints are dangerous to use. Andrew was gonna fix them for 1.3 or 1.4 but I guess he never got to them

DO NOT USE

Note to Andrew: Please correct me if I am wrong on this

Attach to hand. Accept perms. Inhale. Exhale.

Playing with joints is waaaaaaaaaay dangerous. I crashed Solang a few times while building fish with swinging tails! HAVOK 2 is rumored to be able to fix this, but it's also rumored to cure cancer AND halitosis ...

See this thread:

/8/0e/13664/1.html

In there you'll find a link to the original description of joints. There's also a link to what was a useful discussion of how to use joints, but that thread was deleted during the forum reorganization, so the link is now broken.

Karighan, I think from following the other post I know what you're trying to do, the hair thing. A joint wouldn't work when attached to an avatar. Objects attached to avatars lose any physics properties (cant fall, cant "dangle" cant swing). If I'm wrong about that someone say something, but I've been trying to make a choker with a shell on it that sways and it's not happening :-(
